[For Seniors] Recreation Games Related to October Events
October is when the heat finally eases and autumn truly sets in.
The weather is getting cooler, and there are probably more days that feel comfortable.
Autumn is full of exciting events like Halloween and sports festivals.
This time, we’ll introduce recreation ideas related to October’s events.
Since some seniors may find it difficult to go out, we’ve focused on activities that can be enjoyed indoors.

[For Seniors] Recreation Games Related to October Events (21–30)
sports day

Speaking of autumn, it’s the season for sports festivals! For older adults, moving their bodies within their abilities is not only enjoyable but also serves as exercise and can be effective as rehabilitation.
Try planning events such as ball toss games, bowling, or balance games—competitions that can be done while seated or require little strength.
Also, if everyone makes the equipment used in the events together, you can enjoy the preparation process as well, which is highly recommended.
Balloon Parachute

October 22 is Parachute Day.
In honor of the occasion, I’d like to introduce a game called “Balloon Parachute.” In this game, you launch a balloon weighted to resemble a parachute so that it lands on a target with point values.
It’s quite challenging to make it touch down exactly where you aim, but that’s part of the fun—and it’s exciting for spectators too.
Highly recommended!
Treasure Hunt Game

October 4th is “Lost and Found Day.” So, the game I recommend for October is a “Treasure Hunt Game!” Arrange paper cups upside down in a basket and put a few “winning” ones among them.
Once everything is set, have participants take turns picking! The prize content can be anything, but adding messages like “You won the lottery—what would you do?” can spark lively conversation!
Food Quiz

The “Food Quiz” is the perfect recreation for this season, also known as the season of hearty appetites! Think about various fun facts about foods—things you might know and yet don’t—as a way to train your brain! You can find plenty of related quiz videos on free video-sharing sites.
If you have time, it could be fun to create your own original quiz with an autumn flavors theme!
Momotaro Game

Did you know that in Okayama Prefecture, October 7 is designated as “Momotaro Day”? Speaking of Momotaro, everyone knows he’s famous for ogre-slaying! So how about trying this “Momotaro Game,” a target-throwing game arranged to feel like ogre-slaying, as a fun activity for October? Teams of four—Momotaro, the Dog, the Monkey, and the Pheasant—take down various ogres, each worth different points.
You’ll throw beanbags made to look like millet dumplings.
Work together and defeat as many ogres as you can!
Fall prevention exercises

October 10 is Fall Prevention Day.
So, let’s incorporate “fall-prevention exercises” into our October recreation! While seated in a chair, try lifting your legs so they’re parallel to the floor, or go from standing to sitting on the chair.
By moving slowly, you can strengthen muscles you don’t usually engage.
There are many different fall-prevention movements, so be sure to find exercises that you can do comfortably without overexertion!
Lyric Rearrangement Game

Would you like to try a “lyric rearrangement game” using autumn children’s songs? Prepare cards that each have only a portion of the lyrics written on them, scatter them across the table, and then rearrange them to form a complete song.
You can increase the difficulty by mixing in parts of other songs’ lyrics, or prepare lyric cards for two songs and have two teams race to see who can complete their song first.
This game works better if you hum the song as you go rather than just thinking it through in your head.
Let’s work together to complete the song!
