[For Seniors] Easy and fun seated activities you can do in your room
Introducing fun seated recreational activities for older adults!
Even when you want to do exercises in nursing homes or day service centers, activities that are too intense or put strain on the legs and back can increase the risk of falls.
The activities we’re introducing this time are recommended because everyone can enjoy them while staying seated.
From exercises that move only the hands to games that engage the entire upper body, choose whatever looks fun from the many options available.
They’re even more exciting if you make them team competitions!
[For Seniors] Easy and Fun Seated Activities You Can Do in Your Room (1–10)
Ball exercisesNEW!

Doesn’t the mere word “ball” bring back memories—like the rubber balls you played with as a child or the volleyball you were passionate about when you were younger? I still love basketball, so when I hear “ball,” the first thing that comes to mind is a basketball.
Here, we’ll use a ball that’s a bit smaller than a relatively soft volleyball.
The exercises are simple: squeeze the ball between both hands, or hold it between your hands and twist your body left and right.
Just touching the ball can somehow make you feel good.
Try incorporating unusual movements too, like holding the ball behind your back or sandwiching it between your back and a chair.
Preventive care Soran-bushi exerciseNEW!

Just listening to the Soran Bushi fills you with energy, doesn’t it? Many of you probably danced it in elementary school.
This “Soran Bushi Exercise” can be done while seated in a chair, so feel free to try it safely.
The choreography includes poses that mimic rowing a boat and movements inspired by waves.
Since it’s also intended for caregiving prevention, it incorporates opening and closing the legs partway through, as well as opening and closing both hands.
Recall your childhood and dance powerfully.
But please don’t overexert yourself!
round (canon)NEW!

A round is a method of singing where you divide the singers into two or more groups and have them sing the same song with staggered entries.
It’s the same piece, but it creates a different kind of harmony than when everyone sings together.
The key point to watch out for is not getting pulled along by another group.
If you don’t keep track of your own cue and where you are in the song, you’ll end up following another group and won’t be able to get back.
For the starting cue, it’s a good idea for a staff member to give a “ready, go” signal.
Baton relayNEW!

Participants sit on chairs arranged in a circle facing outward.
Make sure the teams are split exactly halfway around the circle.
Prepare two long strings, and have the first and last person on each team hold the ends.
At the starting signal, begin threading batons onto the string one after another.
The team that finishes threading the specified number first wins! If the string sags, the batons will get caught, so everyone should work together.
Wrapping tape around both ends of the string makes it easier to thread the batons.
Paper Cup Relay

This is a simple relay-style game using paper cups and sticks.
Each team sits in a horizontal line, and everyone holds a stick.
A paper cup is placed on the tip of the stick, and players pass the cup onto the next person’s stick.
The cup is passed along in order; once it reaches the last person, it is passed back, and when it returns to the first person, the team finishes.
To pass the cup smoothly, players move their wrists and twist their bodies, so it feels like stretching while playing the game.
Since teams aim to finish faster than the others, a sense of speed is also important, and it can help improve concentration.
Self-care to loosen the soles of the feet and toesNEW!

They say that loosening the soles of the feet and toes improves circulation and helps reduce swelling and coldness.
Let’s do some seated foot self-care to loosen things up.
We’ll work on pressure points on the soles and rotate the toes.
As we age, many people find it bothersome to move their bodies or even find walking difficult.
Seated self-massage and acupressure that you can do yourself seem easy for older adults to try.
Improving circulation in the feet is said to enhance overall blood circulation as well.
It also helps activate the function of the internal organs.
Paper Cup Shooting Game

Create a mechanism to launch a ball using everyday items and use it to play a target-shooting game.
Make a hole in the bottom of a paper cup and attach a piece of balloon rubber cut from a balloon over the hole.
With a ping-pong ball placed in the paper cup, pull back the rubber and release it—the ping-pong ball will shoot out with force.
You can use anything as a target, but it’s best to choose light objects that are easy to knock over with the impact of a ping-pong ball, such as a tower of paper cups.
Because the ping-pong ball flies with considerable force, this game requires some distance to the target.
As long as you secure that space, it’s an easy game to play even on a table.
