[For Seniors] Easy and fun seated activities you can do in your room

Introducing fun seated recreational activities for older adults!

Even when you want to do exercises in nursing homes or day service centers, activities that are too intense or put strain on the legs and back can increase the risk of falls.

The activities we’re introducing this time are recommended because everyone can enjoy them while staying seated.

From exercises that move only the hands to games that engage the entire upper body, choose whatever looks fun from the many options available.

They’re even more exciting if you make them team competitions!

Shoo Away Game

Let’s play a fun game using balls made from crumpled paper.

It’s called the “Shoo-It-Away Game.” Crumple up sheets of paper or newspaper into balls and place them in a horizontal line in the center of the table.

Before you start, put a strip of tape across the middle of the table to mark the center line.

This tape divides the table into your side and your opponent’s side.

When the game begins, use your hands to push the paper balls into your opponent’s territory on the opposite side.

The rules are simple, but it sounds like it could get exciting.

If you make the paper balls pink, they’ll look like cherry blossoms—perfect for an April game.

It also encourages conversation among participants and can help promote communication among older adults.

Giant Ball Relay

The “Giant Ball Relay” is a game that always gets everyone excited at elementary and junior high school sports days! You can enjoy this activity indoors and regardless of age.

Prepare a large ball, such as a balance ball.

Arrange chairs in a single row and have participants sit; then pass the giant ball from the person in front to the person behind.

Because you have to use your hands and arms to pass it, it helps strengthen the hands, fingertips, and arm muscles.

People don’t often get to handle such a large ball in daily life, so older adults are likely to have a great time with it too.

Palm Volleyball is attracting attention as a sport that blends fitness with a competitive element.

Using a 30-gram dedicated ball, players compete to see how many consecutive passes they can make without dropping it, striking the ball with the palm rather than the fingers.

Because the same rules apply regardless of age or gender, everyone can enjoy it together.

You can also adjust the rules to match participants’ fitness levels, making it a great recreational activity to customize and try in a way that suits your group.

It’s a game where two people sit facing each other, each pinching a long, thin strip of newspaper between their fingers, and then pull against each other.

The winner is decided when the newspaper tears, but since newspaper is quite sturdy and doesn’t tear easily, it really encourages players to use their fingertip strength.

Start with a simple rule where the outcome is decided in a single round: whoever is left holding the longer piece wins.

This helps players learn how to hold and apply force.

From there, you can add variations to the rules.

A recommended rule is that the player who ends up with more short, torn pieces wins.

This not only encourages creativity in how to hold and pull, but as the newspaper gradually gets shorter, it also helps players focus on controlling their strength.

If you make it more challenging by adding variations—like incorporating footwork when throwing—you can also gain brain-training benefits from planning movements.

Playing music and having participants pass the ball in time with it can make it easier to find a rhythm.

There are various tips, such as keeping the shoulders and arms moving smoothly and getting a feel for the rhythm, so offer advice as you go and let everyone enjoy passing the ball.

One activity option for events and parties is a bingo game.

Many older adults are already familiar with bingo, aren’t they? While bingo is usually played on paper, this time we’ll introduce a version that uses the feet and beanbags.

Prepare nine paper plates or cups, and have the older adults use their feet to toss beanbags into them.

Use colored tape to group the plates or cups by color, and change the score based on where the beanbag lands.

For example, award 20 points if the beanbag lands in a plate or cup of the same color, and 10 points if it’s a different color.

Because they lift their legs to toss the beanbags, older adults can enjoy the game while also training their legs.

Balloon kick

Recreation for seniors: fun and engaging, easy for those with moderate to severe conditions to join—let’s kick the balloon into the goal!

This is a balloon kick game where you kick balloons into a target frame! Attach the cut-off bottom of a milk carton to the balloon’s knot as a weight so the balloon doesn’t drift around.

Then just kick the balloon so it fits neatly into a frame made from twisted newspapers or similar! Because balloons are light, they travel far even with a small amount of force, so older adults can kick them while seated and still send them flying nicely.

You can also prepare multiple frames and set rules to score the total points of the frames the balloon lands in, or try other variations to enjoy the game in different ways.
