Even for older adults who find it difficult to move their bodies vigorously, they may find it easier to join in if the recreation can be enjoyed while seated.

In fact, there are plenty of games with simple rules that can really liven things up.

From activities using familiar materials to ones that include brain-training elements, we’ll introduce games that, with a bit of creativity, can bring smiles to everyone.

Using your hands and engaging your mind not only makes the activities fun, but also contributes to better health.

Doing them together with others fosters communication and can give life added meaning.

Please enjoy a fun time with easy, seated games.

Simple games you can do while seated (1–10)

Rock-Paper-Scissors Relay

Super simple and exciting! For fun senior activities, this is it: Rock-Paper-Scissors Relay
Rock-Paper-Scissors Relay

It’s a rock-paper-scissors relay where the team that completes one round trip with the baton first wins! First, participants split into two teams, and the person at the front holds the baton.

At the start signal, they play rock-paper-scissors with the person next to them; if the neighbor wins, the baton is passed to them.

You repeat this, and the team that completes a round trip first wins.

The rules are simple, so you can start playing right away.

The tricky part, though, is that the person holding the baton has to lose.

It’s so easy to find yourself trying to win at rock-paper-scissors, isn’t it? (lol)

Table curling

Table curling

Curling is one of the Winter Olympic events.

Since it’s played on ice, it can be difficult for older adults to participate.

But with “table curling,” that’s not a problem! Put evenly spaced marks on a table using tape and assign point values.

Each participant takes turns sliding a paper cup, used as a stand-in for a stone.

To aim for a high score, you need to slide it boldly, but if you use too much force, it will fall off the table.

This seems like a great way to train concentration!

Rock-Paper-Scissors Ball Pass

Day Service Asumiru! Today’s recreation
Rock-Paper-Scissors Ball Pass

When you think of a “ball passing” game, it’s usually a game where you keep sending the ball to the next person and compete on speed.

But in this Rock-Paper-Scissors Ball Passing game, you can’t pass the ball to a teammate unless you win at rock-paper-scissors! You can play it while seated, and it doesn’t require any athletic ability, so it’s perfect to enjoy together with seniors!

Milk carton tower

Day Service Milk Carton Activity 2
Milk carton tower

Milk Carton Tower is a game where you stack thin, ring-shaped slices cut from milk cartons as high as you can.

You can use the rings as they are, but making the edges jagged or adding curves makes them harder to stack, increasing the challenge and the fun.

Try playing head-to-head in teams!

Card Flipping Game

Card Flipping Game

Prepare double-sided cards with different colors on each side and play a game where you keep flipping them to your own color using one hand.

It’s fun to do while seated and also gives your arms and fingertips a workout.

It’s enjoyable with two people or split into groups with several players! No matter how many you flip, they’ll get flipped back again, making it a game full of laughter.

Ho ho hahahaNEW!

Ho ho hahahaNEW!

“Ho-ho Ha-ha-ha” is an activity that combines voice and movement using a uchiwa fan and a paper balloon.

In time with the chant “Ho-ho,” you bounce the paper balloon with the fan, and on “Ha-ha-ha,” you pass it to the next person.

Repeated arm movements help maintain shoulder and arm strength, and the effort to keep the balloon from falling with the fan is expected to improve wrist flexibility.

Watching the balloon’s motion while handing it to the next person also helps maintain concentration and reaction skills.

Doing it while vocalizing stimulates the muscles of the mouth and face, supporting oral function.

Synchronizing voices with those around you fosters a sense of unity and can lead to more smiles and conversation.

Clap-along brain training

[Carefully Selected] No More Confusion About Brain Training! 5 Hand-Clap Brain Training Exercises [Senior Fitness]
Clap-along brain training

It’s a game where you keep the beat with handclaps while adding other movements, training your decision-making as you move your body.

Start by inserting simple hand gestures between claps—like raising your thumb or pinky—and then, as you get used to it, gradually expand into movements that involve your whole body.

As these movements combine and become more complex, there’s more to think about, which enhances the brain-training effect.

If you focus too much on the sequence of movements, your motions can become stiff, so it’s also recommended to include some stepping and consciously loosen up your body.
