In fact, there are plenty of games with simple rules that can really liven things up.

From activities using familiar materials to ones that include brain-training elements, we’ll introduce games that, with a bit of creativity, can bring smiles to everyone.

Milk carton tower

Milk carton tower

Milk Carton Tower is a game where you stack thin, ring-shaped slices cut from milk cartons as high as you can.

You can use the rings as they are, but making the edges jagged or adding curves makes them harder to stack, increasing the challenge and the fun.

Try playing head-to-head in teams!

Card Flipping Game

Prepare double-sided cards with different colors on each side and play a game where you keep flipping them to your own color using one hand.

It’s fun to do while seated and also gives your arms and fingertips a workout.

It’s enjoyable with two people or split into groups with several players! No matter how many you flip, they’ll get flipped back again, making it a game full of laughter.

playing rock-paper-scissors after seeing the opponent’s move (i.e., acting with hindsight/cheating)

[Senior Brain-Training Exercise] Must-See! 8 After-the-Fact Rock-Paper-Scissors Brain Trainings [Preventive Care]
playing rock-paper-scissors after seeing the opponent’s move (i.e., acting with hindsight/cheating)

In regular rock-paper-scissors, playing after seeing the other person’s move is against the rules.

But this “after-the-fact rock-paper-scissors” actually exercises your brain, so it’s recommended for older adults! First, set a rule: given the opponent’s hand, you must either win or lose on purpose.

Then play rock-paper-scissors and, after seeing the hand that’s thrown, quickly decide whether you should play to win or to lose and choose your hand accordingly.

That alone works your brain, but you can add more rules too! For example, you could lose with your hand but win with your foot against the opponent’s move, or refrain from using your hands and just call out whether you win or lose in response to their hand.

You can add all kinds of variations, and they can all be done while seated, so it’s easy to play!

Clap-along brain training

[Carefully Selected] No More Confusion About Brain Training! 5 Hand-Clap Brain Training Exercises [Senior Fitness]
Clap-along brain training

It’s a game where you keep the beat with handclaps while adding other movements, training your decision-making as you move your body.

Start by inserting simple hand gestures between claps—like raising your thumb or pinky—and then, as you get used to it, gradually expand into movements that involve your whole body.

As these movements combine and become more complex, there’s more to think about, which enhances the brain-training effect.

If you focus too much on the sequence of movements, your motions can become stiff, so it’s also recommended to include some stepping and consciously loosen up your body.

Tissue Dropping Game

[Senior Recreation] Tissue Drop Game
Tissue Dropping Game

In the “Tissue Drop Game,” two opponents sit facing each other and place a single tissue on top of their own heads.

At the starting signal, blow as hard as you can to knock the other person’s tissue off! It’s a very simple game, but it gets surprisingly intense, so I highly recommend it!

Bean picking

Bean picking

Place a dish filled with azuki beans in the center, and use chopsticks to move the beans toward yourself.

It’s a classic game that trains delicate fingertip movements, speed, and the ability to focus on small objects.

Setting a time limit and playing head-to-head across a table will make it even more exciting.

Adjust the table size and the distance to the beans to avoid awkward postures, and make sure everything is safe before you enjoy the game.

Brain training that sharpens your reflexes

5 brain-training activities for recreation or exercise that require no equipment, make you laugh and have fun, and improve your reflexes
Brain training that sharpens your reflexes

It’s a game that trains your reflexes by imitating claps so that your timing matches the model person’s clapping as closely as possible.

While getting a firm grasp of the clapping rhythm is key to enjoying the game, focusing too much on the rhythm can make you fall for tricks.

The sequence of observing the model’s hands and reflecting that in your own movements tests both your concentration and reflexes.

Adding changes in rhythm or variations in clapping midway through is also recommended, as it further directs your attention to the model’s hands.
