Newspaper-Based Recreational Activities (1–10)
A quick newspaper tug-of-war with feet

Foot tug-of-war might feel refreshingly new for older adults, too.
Many of us tried tug-of-war as children—this time, let’s do it with our feet! It’s an indoor activity, so the setting is ideal.
Place a sheet of newspaper on the floor and have two people pull on it with their feet.
There’s an illustration in the center; compete to see who can pull more of the newspaper to their side.
The key is to use your leg strength effectively and move quickly.
Enjoy experimenting together and have fun!
Letter-finding game

The “Letter Hunt Game” is a game where you search for specified characters in print media like newspapers or flyers.
The time limit is one minute, and the person who finds the most specified characters within that time wins.
If you don’t have a newspaper, flyers or other printed materials are fine.
Choosing characters that are likely to appear frequently makes the competition more intense and fun.
Since small print can be hard to read, it’s best to prepare print materials with larger text.
Also, adjust the time limit to what works best for the participants.
One-hook Fishing Game

Even if you can’t easily go outside, why not try “single-line fishing” indoors? Scatter lots of long, thin strips of newspaper in front of you, then use a stick to scoop them up one by one like fishing.
The person who catches the most within the time limit wins.
To enhance the atmosphere, you can draw fish on soft paper instead of using newspaper!
Paper cup relay with newspaper batons

This is a game where you roll up newspaper into a stick and use it to pass a paper cup to the next person, like a relay.
Not only are the hand and arm movements to control the stick important, but so is the communication when receiving the cup from the person beside you.
If you split into teams and compete to see who can pass it to the last person the fastest, everyone will be more focused on their movements.
Let’s enjoy cooperating as a group while using our bodies actively to progress through the game.
To boost the fun even more, it’s also recommended to decorate the newspaper sticks in bright colors.
Newspaper ball rolling relay

For seniors, we recommend a simple seated recreation activity called the Newspaper Ball Rolling Relay! Even those who find it difficult to stand or walk due to weak legs can enjoy it using their arms while staying seated.
Making it a team competition is sure to make it even more exciting.
The Newspaper Ball Rolling Relay is a game where you use newspapers to roll a ball along in a relay.
First, participants sit facing each other and hold the ends of a sheet of newspaper.
Then, they roll the ball onto the next person’s newspaper, and finally into a basket to finish.
You can use various items for the ball—such as a regular ball, beanbags, or a beach ball.
Through this game, everyone can cooperate, have fun together, and deepen social connections.
Using the hands and arms also helps reduce lack of exercise.
Please consider incorporating it into activities at nursing homes or day service centers.
It’s a fun way to play while strengthening bonds with friends.
Hand-wrapping newspaper

Here’s a fun recreation activity using newspaper! The rules are simple: compete to see how fast you can roll up the newspaper using your hands.
You can make it more fun by setting different rules, like using both hands or only one hand.
Another exciting variation is to face each other and roll up the same sheet of newspaper from opposite ends to see who can roll up more.
The heated competition will get older adults watching to enjoy it together as well! This activity can be done while seated, so people who have difficulty standing or who use a wheelchair can also take part.
Recreation Using Newspapers (11–20)
Paper cup launcher

It’s a game where you swing a stick made of newspaper to launch a paper cup placed on the tip forward, and compete on how far it flies.
Your ability to control force is tested—how you swing determines how well the power transfers to the cup and how far it goes.
Just swinging with brute force won’t work, so pay attention to where you start the swing, when you stop it, and the angle.
Through the game, you’ll also get good movement in your upper body, especially around the shoulders, which is another key benefit.
