Umbrella spinning

Umbrella Spinning: Daikagura Performing Art by Hōraike Tamanosuke
Umbrella spinning

This umbrella-spinning act was the signature performance of Ebiichi Somenosuke and Sometaro, famous for their “Congratulations!” catchphrase.

Their stock line, “We’re spinning more than usual today,” would instantly bring the house to life.

Why not invite coworkers or classmates to practice and perform this umbrella-spinning act? Video sites are full of tutorials labeled things like “Master it in 3 days” and “Anyone can do it.” Be sure to use them as references.

And of course, the umbrella you’ll need is a traditional wagasa.

It can be hard to find in local shops, but it’s easy to get online.

Filming your practice sessions and showing the video before the main performance could be a great way to build excitement.

Break disposable chopsticks using the paper sleeve

Breaking disposable chopsticks using the paper sleeve—it’s a bit of a surprising trick, isn’t it? It needs no prep and you can do it right away, so it’s perfect as a small bit of entertainment at gatherings.

The key is to pin the chopsticks on the table and strike the paper sleeve down with force.

That split-second impact will neatly break the chopsticks in two.

Pull it off and you’re sure to hear gasps of surprise! It’s a great hidden talent to show off a new side of yourself.

With this, you’ll be well on your way to becoming a master of party tricks!

flash mob dance

[Latest 2025] For a lively year-end party, go with a flash mob dance
flash mob dance

Flash mobs that bring unexpected emotion to proposals and parties are a tempting choice for entertainment.

Yamauchi from the comedy duo Kamaitachi pulled off a huge gag by attempting a flash mob all by himself at his partner Hamaie’s wedding.

We wouldn’t recommend it unless you’re very brave… Since it’s mainly dancing, it may require a longer practice period than other performances.

It’s reassuring if you have a few people with dance experience.

For company events, it might be fun to divide into teams—like a junior team and a veteran team—and perform that way!

plate spinning

Plate Spinning Course – Basics – (1) How to Spin a Plate
plate spinning

The classic gag that’s been loved for ages: plate spinning.

In fact, it’s surprisingly easy to start if you use a dedicated set.

Just place a plate on the tip of a stick and spin it, and you’ll captivate your audience.

It’s super portable, so it’s perfect for quickly showing off at year-end or New Year parties! It’s exciting to increase the number of spinning plates, and even if you mess up, it gets a laugh—great for livening up the crowd.

Add your own lines or costumes, and it’s sure to be an even bigger hit! Give it a try yourself!

Contact juggling

[Revealed] A street performer explains how to make a crystal ball float (contact juggling)
Contact juggling

It’s a type of juggling that makes the ball look like it’s floating through the position of the crystal ball and the movement of the hands.

Using a transparent crystal ball creates unique light refraction, and by arranging your fingers cleverly, you can make it appear to float.

Because you move without changing the position of the heavy crystal ball, the performance requires not only smooth hand movements but also arm strength to keep holding the ball.

In the signature pose where both hands are held out to the sides—the highlight of the act—the ball is pinched between the back thumb and the front ring finger.

In this pose, pay extra attention to finger strength and to how you present it.

oshibori doll

Oshibori towel figurines making a splash online: Masterful craft by the president of a Kitakyushu company
oshibori doll

We make dolls out of oshibori (wet towels).

Some are simple and can be made with just the towel, while others use rubber bands or disposable chopsticks.

Rubber bands don’t take up much space, so it’s fine to carry them around.

There are even performances where people put on plays or dance the Soran Bushi using oshibori dolls.

pantomime

[Pantomime/Wall Workshop] Show it off at drinking parties and gatherings!
pantomime

It’s a classic, but it’s a tough kind of pantomime to make look good.

Making an invisible wall seem real or a light bag look heavy—at that point, it’s art.

Because it’s so exciting, it’s also hard to master, but you can come up with your own new bits and it works as a hobby, too.

Definitely give it some practice!
