air guitar

Nanami “Seven Seas” Nagura (JPN) 2018 Air Guitar World Championships
air guitar

Since comedian Yōsuke Daichi of the duo Dainoji won the world championship in 2006, air guitar has become a full-fledged mainstream phenomenon in Japan.

It’s all about pretending to play as if you’re holding a guitar—everything is “air”—but when you watch someone really good, there’s a sharpness to it that makes it look like they’re actually performing, and you can’t help but get into it yourself.

How about trying air guitar as entertainment at your next event? It takes a bit of practice, but the cost to practice and perform is zero—you can do it with just your body.

Pi recitation

My 5-year-old daughter memorized 1,000 digits of pi.
Pi recitation

Memorize lots of digits of pi and casually recite them.

It may seem low-key at first glance, but hardly anyone memorizes this much, so people will be impressed! Once you’ve learned it, it’s a one-shot trick you can show off in all sorts of situations.

Why not try memorizing it yourself?

Cup Toss

Blow on it and blow the cup away.
Cup Toss

It’s a trick where you blow on cups to flip and stack them using only your breath.

You can’t use just any cup, so it might be hard to do right away…

But it would be great if you could perform it using paper cups during a house party.

With practice, you can stack many cups.

Fluttering Tissue Grab

Tissue Flutter-Grabbing Showdown! [Tissue, Hitachi, Laughter]
Fluttering Tissue Grab

As the title suggests, it’s an activity where you catch falling tissues with chopsticks.

Simply grabbing them can feel a bit underwhelming, so try spicing it up: make it a head-to-head challenge, use more awkward tools, or add penalty games—experiment with various twists to make it more exciting.

Sport stacking

Sport stacking | Note: This isn’t fast-forwarded. Lightning-fast cup handling [God-tier skill]
Sport stacking

It’s a sport where competitors stack and unstack plastic cups in predetermined formations as fast as possible.

Despite the cute origin story—that it began with American kids playing with paper cups—it’s a competition that conveys intense excitement and tension.

The stacking sequences are largely standardized, so the event tests each participant’s concentration, reflexes, and fine motor skills.

Using paper cups can be convenient for practice, but when you push for speed you may crush them by gripping too hard, so competition-grade, durable cups are recommended.

comedy sketch

comedy sketch

A “konto” is a short comic skit intended to make people laugh, often performed by comedians on variety shows.

Konto sketches have a storyline, so even those who don’t usually watch comedy can enjoy them.

There’s freedom in how they’re performed and no limit on the number of participants, so why not try one with your friends? If you feel unsure while brainstorming—since everyone has a different sense of humor—it might help to create several short sketches that vary the types of jokes.

backflip

[Easy!?] A backflip explained in 30 seconds!
backflip

If you’re confident in your athletic ability, why not try a back handspring? If you pull it off, your act will be over in an instant and you’ll look cool doing it! The key to a successful back handspring is to swing your arms big and jump boldly backward.

Beginners will likely find falling backward scary at first, but you’ll get used to it—start by practicing falling on a soft surface.

Once you can do a back handspring, why not challenge yourself with combinations of moves?
