The Checkers Popular Song Ranking [2026]

We’ve compiled a ranking of popular songs by the legendary idol group The Checkers.

From their early singles rooted in oldies to their later singles that incorporate a variety of styles—doo-wop, mood kayō (Japanese mood music), UK rock, jazz, and fusion—every track is a standout classic that’s a pleasure to listen to.

This song is also one of the indispensable, quintessential tracks from The Checkers’ early days.

The minor-key melody unique to kayōkyoku and the plaintive, lamenting lyrics really got stuck in my head back then.

The sax in the intro is simple, yet it exudes remarkable taste.

The Last Show of Love and SorrowChekkāzu51rank/position

It was included on the soundtrack for the 1986 film SONG FOR U.S.A.

It’s a beautiful love ballad about parting with a lover at a summer resort, and Fumiya Fujii’s sweet voice leaves listeners with a poignant ache.

Rudolph the Red-Nosed ReindeerChekkāzu52rank/position

Do you all know The Checkers? That nostalgic saxophone sound and rock ’n’ roll vibe are exactly the Checkers’ signature style.

But what they’re singing is unmistakably “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.” By the way, Fumiya plays Santa and comforts the reindeer.

I had only seen them as idols, so watching them sing this song was the first time I saw the Checkers as a band.

It brings to mind the image of gliding lightly through the waves while surfing.

It feels like the Checkers’ song is cheering on young people who love the sea, bursting with energy.

Teenage DreamerChekkāzu54rank/position

This song was the theme for the drama “Uchi no Ko ni Kagitte 2” at the time, so I think it’s one of the better-known Checkers numbers.

It’s a simple, down-to-earth ballad that’s very soothing and comforting.

The lyrics, as expected, are tastefully written too.
