There is always love on your back.MISIA15rank/position

This is a single released by MISIA in September 2020 as a cheer song celebrating the bond between people and horses.

Chosen as the JRA Equestrian Support CM song, it was created to cheer on the equestrian events at Tokyo 2020.

It’s memorable that MISIA, who enjoys horseback riding herself, wrote the lyrics to capture the moving moments when hearts connect with horses.

The song carefully portrays the warm sense of “horse and rider as one,” where intentions are shared through the reins and points of contact with the body.

Rather than emphasizing speed, it cherishes a gentle closeness, filled with warmth that softly supports someone from behind.

Give it a listen when you want to cheer on someone important to you—or to encourage yourself.

A supreme ballad woven from majestic strings and a bluesy melody.

MISIA’s expressive vocals, spanning five octaves, resonate deeply with the heart.

Released in November 2015, this song was chosen as the first cour ending theme for Season 1 of the popular anime Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans, marking MISIA’s first-ever anime tie-in.

The lyrics were written by MISIA herself, with composition and arrangement by Shiro Sagisu.

Infused with feelings born from her support activities in developing countries, the piece captivates with a sophisticated musicality that incorporates elements of jazz.

It’s a track you’ll want to play on a quiet night while lost in thought alone, or during special moments with someone dear.

If you’re looking for a song with a powerful message and a tender piano melody that truly moves you, this track is highly recommended.

Included on the album “SOUL QUEST,” released in July 2011, it is a recovery-support song created in response to the Great East Japan Earthquake.

Despite its simple arrangement of just solo piano, it carries overwhelming intensity.

It was also used as the ending theme for TV Asahi’s special news program “Let’s Connect, Japan—What TV Reported, What We Want to Convey.” MISIA’s delicate vocals—down to the sound of her breathing—and the astonishing sustained notes toward the end are sure to bring listeners to tears.

It’s a work that stays close to anyone enduring an anxious night and gives them the courage to look forward.

Find a quiet place and listen carefully, taking in the meaning of the lyrics.

Kiss me and hold meMISIA18rank/position

A favorite? song of MISIA’s that’s included on both her first album “Mother Father Brother Sister” and the best-of “MISIA GREATEST HITS.” It may not have the flash of her other hit singles, but once you listen, it’s sure to touch your heart.

Of course, the lyrics and music are by MISIA.

The lyrics, which can be read as “Even after a breakup, I can keep loving you—this love is eternal,” are sad yet forward-looking.

The understated production that seems to lift MISIA’s vocals is also great.

While it can be taken as an epilogue to a heartbreak, I want people who are head-over-heels in love right now to hear it too.

Fleur de la PassionMISIA19rank/position

This is a song by MISIA, a singer who continues to captivate listeners with her overwhelming vocal power and expressive range.

It was released for streaming in July 2024 and fired up the Paris Olympics as Nippon TV’s “2024 Athlete Support Song.” The sound, produced with an orchestra of over 40 members and a gospel choir, is nothing short of breathtaking.

Also included on the album “LOVE NEVER DIES,” this piece, with its passionate vocals and grand scale, is sure to ignite a flame of hope in listeners’ hearts.

Even the gloomy, unmotivated mood that often hits in May can be blown away in an instant by the song’s sheer energy.

It’s the perfect anthem for when you want to rally yourself.

This is a grand ballad created as NHK’s theme song for the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympics, singing of a wish for peace and the strength to face adversity.

Composed by Toshiaki Matsumoto and arranged by Takayuki Hattori, it features a rich, full-orchestra sound and MISIA’s overwhelming vocal prowess.

Speaking of MISIA, her stunning vocal sustain is iconic.

In “Hatenaku Tsuzuku Story,” the chorus contains many long tones, so singing it in chest voice feels great and is sure to overwhelm listeners.

Make skillful use of your head voice as well to deliver the song effectively.

For more recent listeners, MISIA is probably strongly associated with being a classic, orthodox diva, but for women in their 40s, doesn’t she evoke more of an R&B singer image? Among her songs from that era, the one I especially recommend is BELIEVE.

Although the chorus features a high-pitched phrase with quite dramatic pitch jumps, most of the rest sits in the low-to-mid range.

Since there are repeated falsetto passages, if you’re not comfortable with head voice, try lowering the key before you tackle it.
