NOKKO is a singer-songwriter also known as the vocalist of REBECCA, who announced their restart in 2015.

Her fifth single “Ningyo” (Mermaid), released after REBECCA disbanded in 1991, was used as the theme song for the TV drama “The Girl Who Leapt Through Time” and has since become a signature track covered by many artists.

Its ensemble, brimming with a floating, translucent feel that evokes the title, draws listeners into its world even in karaoke.

With bittersweet lyrics and a lyrical melody that captivates men, it’s a ballad that, if you can sing it well, is sure to make you popular.

I remember being blown away when I first heard this song back then.

There was nothing like it at the time, and I thought the female vocal was so cool that I got completely hooked and listened to it obsessively.

I still love this song, and I still sing it at karaoke.

It’s a badass female vocal.

A solo number by NOKKO, the vocalist of Rebecca, “I-No-Chi” is a song about what it means for a ‘life’ to be born into this world and go on living.

Released in 1995, it features a mysterious melody wrapped in NOKKO’s uniquely evocative worldview.

Her high-tone voice gives the impression of illuminating the birth of all life.

It feels like a song that, while telling a baby ‘this is what it means to live,’ also teaches mothers ‘this is what it means to nurture life.’

From the moment the intro starts, you can absolutely tell it’s this song.

It has a rare ballad style—melancholic yet calming—and it’s become a track you can listen to peacefully.

I love it so much and still find myself listening to it from time to time.

It’s such a masterpiece that, even now, I still remember the lyrics and can lose myself in it in a mysterious way.

This song is one of my favorites, too.

It really sticks in my head.

I think it’s a real masterpiece.

It goes into high keys over and over, but the way NOKKO sings them so effortlessly is amazing.

It makes me want to keep listening.

I’d love to hear it again.

With a singing voice more like Cyndi Lauper than the Japanese version of Madonna—so cool, and so adorably cute—I fell in love with it instantly.

I don’t think there were any singers like her back then.

I remember she was already shining and incredibly cool even at that time.

Kazutoshi Sakurai unexpectedly covered a Mr.

Children hit.

At the time it was surprising—NOKKO covering a song with a male lead vocal? I remember being really shocked.

It’s become a song that still holds up as a hidden gem.

When NOKKO sings it, it somehow feels perfectly natural.
