Fighting Man BluesThe Back Horn43rank/position

Included on their major 5th album, “Life in the Sun.” The opening A-melody, built on a heavy beat with a piercing bass attack, leaves a strong impression.

It’s packed with their signature “muddiness.” The decadent lyrics, depicting men grinding themselves down through labor, are another distinctive feature.

Their 11th single.

A track defined by explosive breaks, dissonant guitars, and a bright, piercingly punk chorus.

It channels their trademark madness into a pop framework—making it, in a sense, an ideal single.

The final section’s ferocious drums and sobbing, wailing guitar are especially powerful.

This is a song included on their 8th single released in 2004.

It has a very dark, eerie atmosphere.

It was used as an insert song in the film CASSHERN, and it matches that world perfectly.

The lyric “delicate hero” may be a play on words referencing Casshern.

The groaning-like voice that plays during the interlude is apparently a reversed recording, but it’s quite hard to make out and no definitive answer has been reached.

This was the band’s first digital-only single, created in response to the Great East Japan Earthquake that occurred on March 11, 2011.

Fukushima Prefecture, which suffered the most devastating damage from the disaster, is also the hometown of guitarist Eijun Suganami and drummer Shinji Matsuda.

Produced under what must have been overwhelming emotions, the resulting work is not merely a song to comfort the wounded; true to their style, it is a message song that seizes light through darkness.

Flower of DreamsThe Back Horn47rank/position

Their 8th single.

A mid-tempo ballad where a breezy vocal delivery is infused with the poignant tones of the guitar.

With lines like “May the flower of dreams be dyed in colors beyond imagination” and “And someday, may it bloom proudly and strong,” the lyrics look forward even amid the sadness—making this a standout masterpiece.

From their major debut album released in 2001.

You could say this is one of THE BACK HORN’s quintessential early tracks.

The sharp, cutting guitar tone from the intro and the vocals that sound like a cry from the depths of the heart are really cool.

coastlineThe Back Horn49rank/position

From their eighth album released in 2010.

Here’s the acoustic version.

As the title suggests, the lyrics evoke scenes along the coastline, and the heartfelt, soaring melody makes this song wonderfully soothing.
