ROCK IN JAPAN FES. 2016 Performing Artists (1–10)

FUNKASTICRIP SLYME

RIP SLYME is a five-member hip-hop group active since 1994.

Released in 2002, FUNKASTIC can be said to be the song that sparked their breakthrough, achieving their highest ever position on the Oricon charts.

The track also drew attention for their collaboration with guitarist Tomoyasu Hotei.

That version is incredibly cool as well, so be sure to give it a listen.

Sugar Song and Bitter StepUNISON SQUARE GARDEN

UNISON SQUARE GARDEN “Sugar Song and Bitter Step” Short Ver.
Sugar Song and Bitter StepUNISON SQUARE GARDEN

UNISON SQUARE GARDEN is a three-piece rock band active since 2004.

Their song “Sugar Song and Bitter Step” is catchy, highly upbeat, and so fun that it naturally makes you want to move your body as you listen.

The opening drums are striking and cool.

SHAMROCKUVERworld

UVERworld is a rock band from Shiga Prefecture.

The song I’m introducing from their catalog is an older one: SHAMROCK from 2006.

It’s a refreshing, comfortable rock tune and arguably one of their signature tracks.

THANXWANIMA

Alongside MONOEYES, WANIMA has been booked for many festivals this year.

The three-piece rock band from Kumamoto is energizing the melodic hardcore scene.

Despite their edgy appearance, this song’s strikingly straightforward and beautiful lyrics stand out.

It’s a staple at their live shows and guaranteed to get the crowd fired up.

Run Away[Alexandros]

Run Away[Alexandros]

[Alexandros] is a four-piece rock band that has now become a leading artist in Japanese rock.

Their song Run Away features wonderfully airy, spatial guitar sounds and a great sense of drive—it’s the perfect feel-good track for today.

Vocalist/guitarist Yohei Kawakami’s high voice is lovely as well.
