Songs about the SDGs / songs that use the SDGs as their theme
SDGs is a term you often hear on TV and elsewhere—but do you really understand it?
In a nutshell, SDGs stands for the Sustainable Development Goals.
It’s a set of goals for everyone around the world to work together to solve issues like environmental problems, discrimination, poverty, and human rights challenges by 2030.
Many people may feel like they understand that there are many problems and difficulties, but actually don’t fully grasp them.
Let’s have both adults and children learn about the SDGs through songs themed around the global goals!

SDGs Song Goal 8: Decent Work and Economic GrowthAo (Kamiki Ryunosuke) & Kii (Nikaido Fumi)

Do you take it for granted that you’ll be paid according to your work? This song, themed on the SDG goal “Decent Work and Economic Growth,” tells us that some people have no choice but to work in harsh conditions, or don’t get paid even when they do work.
Sadly, even in Japan there are people forced to do unpaid overtime, given workloads that make a humane life impossible, and some even lose their lives.
Through this song, let’s work together to create a world where people can enjoy working and are paid fairly for the work they do.
SDGs Song Goal 17: Achieve the Goals through PartnershipsAo (Kamiki Ryunosuke) & Kii (Nikaido Fumi)

The final goal of the SDGs is “Partnerships for the Goals.” This partnership means a cooperative relationship.
The idea is that economically prosperous developed countries should support poorer developing countries so that we can all achieve the goals together.
Of course, it’s not just about countries; it also aims for mutual understanding across differences such as gender, race, and religion, and for helping one another.
As the song lyrics say, we hope to build a society where people around the world can work together, overcoming many barriers!
SDGs Song Goal 10: Reduce Inequality Within and Among CountriesAo (Kamiki Ryunosuke) & Kii (Nikaido Fumi)

This is a song sung by Ao and Kii, characters from NHK’s children’s program “Hirogare! Irotoridori.” Its theme is one of the SDGs: “Reduce inequality within and among countries.” There are many problems that arise from differences in appearance and ways of thinking—such as racial discrimination, gaps between rich and poor, and conflicts stemming from differences in faith.
What can we do to eliminate inequality? I hope that by listening to this song, you’ll put yourself in others’ shoes and think about equality starting from your everyday relationships.

SDGs Song Goal 15: Life on Land—Let’s Protect Terrestrial BiodiversityAo (Kamiki Ryunosuke) & Kii (Nikaido Fumi)

During spring and summer vacations, we often play by rivers and in the mountains, right? On the other hand, the toilet paper and desks we use every day are made by cutting down trees from forests.
But if humans keep cutting down as many trees as they want, the rivers and mountains will disappear.
And if the rivers and forests disappear, the animals that live there will be in trouble, too.
That’s why the theme of Goal 15 is to protect nature, such as forests and rivers.
Even now, trees are being cut down one after another, and nature continues to be destroyed.
Hopefully, the day will come when nature increases again.
SDGs Song Goal 9: Build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization, and foster innovationAo (Kamiki Ryunosuke) & Kii (Nikaido Fumi)

A song based on the SDGs goal “Build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization and foster innovation.” Our daily lives and the economy are supported by technology—roads, water systems, internet connections, and more.
Yet there are still people around the world who lack access to new technologies and face difficult living conditions and poverty.
Through this song, we want to bring the technologies we take for granted to people everywhere! It would be wonderful if children felt that way.
It will surely lead to smiles from children all around the world.
SDGs Song Goal 11: Sustainable Cities and CommunitiesAo (Kamiki Ryunosuke) & Kii (Nikaido Fumi)

This is a song themed on one of the SDGs: “Sustainable Cities and Communities.” Everyone wants to live in a city that is clean and safe.
Yet there are people who have no access to safe drinking water and are forced to live in areas with air pollution.
They must be facing great difficulties every day.
What does an environment that is comfortable for everyone look like? Please take a moment to think about it.
The everyday things right in front of us are surely connected to livability!
SDGs Song Goal 4: Quality Education for AllAo (Kamiki Ryunosuke) & Kii (Nikaido Fumi)

I think many kids don’t like studying, but did you know there are people in the world who want to learn yet can’t? This song is themed around the SDGs goal “Quality Education for All.” In Japan, everyone goes to elementary school around the age of seven, but in reality, some people can’t attend school because of their gender or environment.
Not being able to read, write, or do math—what would you do if that happened to you? I hope this song helps children understand how important education is.
