As Haruka Shimazaki of AKB48 grew more famous, the term “shio taiō” (cold or curt treatment) also became widely recognized by the public.

This time, I’d like to explain the word “shio taiō” from the perspective of the idol scene.

What is “shio taiō” (cold, curt treatment)?

The word “shio-taiou” (cold/aloof response), which is also synonymous with Haruka Shimazaki, a.k.a. Paruru.

cold, unfriendly, as salty as (someone being 'salty')saltyWe call that kind of response a 'cold response.'

Paruru’s cold attitude is so cute...

A bit of a tsundere vibe is nice too, and she clearly has a different aura from other idols.

It’s different from the typical idol approach, but this is good in its own way.

The antonym of 'shio-taio' (cold, curt attitude) isgod-tier customer serviceIt is.

I think it's pretty easy to imagine what a 'god-tier response' would be.

When someone treats you better than expected, it’s called a “god-tier response” (or “godlike service”).

In other words, it means top-tier/highest praise, right?

For example, when I went to an idol handshake event and they remembered my name.

If it’s during a live show and they give special fan service just to you, that’s god-tier treatment, right?

Now, I’d like to dig deeper into the meaning of “shio-taiō” (cold/curt response).

The word “shio taiō” (literally “salt response”)positive meaningWhen used with, and,That's not the case. There are times.

When used in a positive sense

When used in a good way,a pure attitude, an unflattering/unfawning attitudeIt is used with the nuance of functioning as ...

Fans are charmed by that child just the way they are, not understanding sales tactics.

They show it to you at times when they’re truly happy, for example.plainWe can’t help but feel a flutter in our hearts at unadorned smiles and natural attitudes.

Also, when I’m asked a question once in a while, it makes me feel like someone’s interested, and that makes me happy!

This is definitely correct, right?

This is something that falls into this gap.

From their perspective, when someone suddenly shows them pure, passionate feelings, they don’t know how to respond.bewilderedIt seems to be getting tighter/closing up.

I think most fans wouldn’t really mind even if their favorite artist gave them the cold shoulder (lol).

No matter how cold someone’s attitude is, if you like them, you can’t help but find it appealing.

When used with a negative meaning

When used in a negative sense,Poor fan service and attitudeIt is used with that meaning.

For example, in the case of an idol who is cold toward their fans.

From an outsider’s perspective, people end up thinking, “Is 〇〇 taking their work lightly?” and “Even though they’re paying, doesn’t 〇〇 feel sorry about this?” and conclude, “I don’t like it because 〇〇 is so cold.” This is how it ends up looking.

Also, even if you're a fan, if an idol who is usually kind suddenly turns cold at today's handshake event...

In times like that, ask something like, “The other day you were kind of cold—did something happen?” This way you’re also conveying, “Did I do something? Did I do something that made you dislike me?”to hint at it / to suggest it subtlyIt is possible to do (it).

Instead of asking directly using the term “shio-taiō” (cold/aloof response),to hint; to allude; to drop hints (often subtly implying something without stating it directly)I can.

The term “taiou” (対応) is quite widespread, so it’s easy to use.

When used in everyday life

The term 'shio-taiou' (cold treatment) isn’t used only in idol circles.

Since it’s a term that has become widespread mainly among young people, daily lifeIt is also used.

For example, you can use it when a friend suddenly acts cold toward you.

Rather than asking, “You were kind of cold just now, weren’t you?”, saying, “You were pretty salty just now, right?”In a joking wayIt can be heard, and it’s hard to overinterpret.

Saying that the clerk gave you the cold shoulder is a bit...sloppy, curt customer servicewhen it was done.

It's a bit lonely when you can't see the clerk's smile, isn't it?

Lastly

Have your questions about the cold response been cleared up?

It’s not a word you often hear in everyday conversation, but it’s an easy one to use, isn’t it?

Personally, I find idols with a cold attitude really cute.

By the way, the idol I support is incredibly friendly, but precisely because of that, it feels like they’re getting too many fans, so I sometimes think it might be okay for them to be a bit more distant.
