A summer so hot you break into a sweat from the morning.

Things like swimming in the ocean, shaved ice, and summer festivals may come to mind.

However, it seems that many older adults find it difficult to sense heat and the change of seasons.

So this time, we’re sharing ideas for wall decorations that let people feel summer even inside a facility.

We’ve gathered works featuring iconic summer plants and animals like sunflowers and fireflies, as well as seasonal scenes such as the sea and fireworks.

By enjoying the season through wall displays and reminiscing about summers past, we hope everyone can savor their days more deeply.

Please use these craft activity ideas with older adults to help create enjoyable moments together.

Here’s an idea for sunflower wall decorations that will instantly brighten up your summer walls! Sunflowers are the quintessential summer flower—many of us may have grown them in our gardens as children.

Why not enjoy making these while reminiscing about those days? Layer two sheets of tissue paper, fold them in an accordion, staple the center to secure, trim both ends, and then fan it open to create the sunflower petals.

For the center of the sunflower, you can cut a circle out of construction paper and add patterns with crayons or other materials.

Depending on the size of your wall, use sunflowers as accents or make lots of them to create a stunning large display!

Just looking at the cute ice creams is soothing, isn’t it? Ice cream comes in many shapes—served in a glass, bars, cups, soft-serve, and more.

Think about a design that suits the space and the room’s atmosphere.

It could be fun to make it while chatting with seniors about their favorite flavors or nostalgic ice creams from the past.

You might decorate with lots of colorful ice cream, or add animals that pair well with ice cream, like polar bears and penguins, for a playful touch!

Diorama

[Senior Recreation] You can easily make a mock diorama using empty boxes. Summer flowers: sunflower, morning glory, and lotus illustrations.
Diorama

The word “diorama” is often heard in the world of plastic models.

If you’re a man, you might have built diorama models of Mobile Suit Gundam or Space Battleship Yamato when you were younger.

The history of dioramas is actually quite recent—the first use is said to have been in 1915 as a display device at the Baroque Museum in the UK.

Here, we’ll introduce an easy-to-make shoebox diorama.

Cool, refreshing themes like the ocean are recommended.

For example, for an undersea scene, paste a photo of the sea on the bottom inside of the box.

It’s fine to use real rocks or sand for the stones and sand scattered on the bottom.

You can make submarines and fish out of paper clay or use store-bought miniatures—the ideas are limitless.

Create it with the mindset of recreating a real landscape.

For women, making a diorama of a palace or a grand garden could also be lovely.

Stained glass-style fireworks

[Summer Craft] Stained-Glass Style Fireworks! Sparkly, Cute Fireworks to Hold Up to the Sun [For 4-Year-Olds]
Stained glass-style fireworks

This stained-glass-style craft lets you feel the beauty of fireworks bursting in the night sky and is a vibrant project recommended for older adults as well.

Fold a sheet of black construction paper in half and mark the areas to cut so they form the shapes of fireworks.

After freely drawing the firework patterns, carefully cut along the marks.

Layer and attach colored cellophane—such as red, yellow, and blue—onto a piece of parchment (baking) paper to create multicolored fireworks.

Finally, place the cut black paper on top, and you’ll have stained-glass-style fireworks you can enjoy by holding them up to the light.

Display them by a window to catch sunlight or the evening glow for a sparkling effect that’s a treat for the eyes.

Using scissors and glue, this summery project offers gentle, hands-on work that’s enjoyable without strain, making it especially appealing.

These hibiscus wall decorations will boost the summer mood even more.

The brightly colored hibiscus flowers are sure to make you feel like you’ve traveled to a tropical paradise! If you arrange them on facility walls, older adults will love them too.

They’re also great for summer craft activities at day service centers.

Hibiscus flowers are easy to make using tissue paper and pipe cleaners.

Folding and unfolding the tissue paper and bending the pipe cleaners also help with finger dexterity training.

Using a variety of colors like red, pink, and yellow will create a gorgeous wall display!

Heart pattern

Heart pattern

Would you like to make a heart garland that can be used for wall decorations, hanging ornaments, and even Tanabata events? It’s a perfect idea for a lively origami activity at a day service, where everyone can enjoy making it together! First, fold the origami paper so that one side is divided into eight equal parts, then cut along the fold lines to make eight strips.

Use four of them: fold one strip in half with the colored side facing outward, and fold the remaining three strips in half with the white side facing outward.

Next, place one of the white-out strips on top of the first colored-out strip, staple them together at the base, then curl the outer ends downward to form a heart—done! Repeat the same steps to complete the heart garland.

This kind of detailed handiwork is also beneficial for seniors’ finger dexterity training and can help with dementia prevention.
