[Low Difficulty] Recommended Tchaikovsky Piano Pieces [Intermediate]

The great composer born in Russia, Pyotr Tchaikovsky, is a towering figure who gave the world many masterpieces—works that even those who aren’t classical music enthusiasts have likely heard at least once—ranging from his ballet music known as the “Three Great Ballets” to the “Three Great Symphonies” and various concertos.

It may not be the first thing that comes to mind, but Tchaikovsky actually wrote many wonderful piano pieces as well.

This article introduces several of his works, focusing mainly on piano pieces of relatively low difficulty, while also including some of his famous non-piano compositions.

19 is a collection of piano works composed in 1873.

3, Albumblatt, with its bright and lively character, calls for a clear tone with well-defined articulation, as well as richly varied dynamics to create expressive playing.

Because the short piece contains several shifts in scene, being able to differentiate each section will result in a higher-level performance.

Since the piece requires the use of the pedal, be sure to practice your pedaling carefully.

October: ‘Autumn Song’ from the piano cycle The Seasons is a piece composed with reference to a poem by the Russian poet Aleksey Konstantinovich Tolstoy.

Its lingering syncopated rhythm and poignant melody evoke a tightening feeling in the heart.

Because beginner piano method books rarely include pieces with continuous syncopation, it may be challenging at first to keep the rhythm accurately.

By practicing with a metronome, you can learn which notes align exactly with the beats and master the syncopation.

Tchaikovsky, one of Russia’s greatest composers, is well known for his ballets and symphonies, but he also wrote many outstanding piano pieces.

Composed in 1878, Album for the Young is a collection of 24 pieces born from his affection for his nephew.

Opening the set, this piece is a short work depicting a quiet morning prayer.

Despite its simple structure, its solemn atmosphere and beautiful melody are striking.

It is recommended for early- to intermediate-level players and is ideal for developing expressiveness.

The cheerful, lively atmosphere of “Napoli Song,” No.

18 from Album for the Young, is especially striking.

Pyotr Tchaikovsky spent time in Italy and is said to have been very fond of its climate and culture.

You can feel Italy’s free and generous spirit in this piece, too.

Here, you’re asked to maintain the characteristic left-hand rhythm with precision while making the right hand sing.

The second half, where the tempo increases, is a bit more challenging, but it’s important to practice carefully without being fixated on speed.

First, work diligently to capture the light, buoyant rhythm.

The piece “The Seasons: May ‘White Nights (May Night),’ Op.

37b-5” is notable for its slow melody in 9/8 time.

In terms of difficulty, anyone who can play Czerny’s Op.

599 (the ‘30 Études’) should be able to perform it without issue.

There aren’t any particularly difficult sections, but if anything, the changes in meter could be considered challenging.

The 2/4 section starting at measure 20 may be confusing at first for those unaccustomed to irregular meters.

If you pay attention to the hand interplay at measure 10 and the modulation beginning at measure 20, you’ll definitely be able to play it—so give it a try.

As the title suggests, “12 Pieces of Intermediate Level No.

6: ‘Song Without Words,’ Op.

40-6” is a work composed for intermediate players.

Although it is relatively obscure, it offers a well-balanced level of difficulty that serves as a rite of passage for intermediates.

The challenge of this piece lies in its rhythm.

From the very beginning, it introduces rhythms that are hard to keep steady, which can make it quite unpleasant for those who tend to get nervous in performance.

However, as you transition from intermediate to advanced, complex meters like 7/8 are inevitable.

If you memorize it thoroughly and understand the structure of the piece before playing, it doesn’t demand particularly advanced technique, so you will certainly be able to perform it.
