Iconic and Popular Songs by THE YELLOW MONKEY (Iemon)

Here’s an introduction to songs by THE YELLOW MONKEY, the legendary band that created a huge buzz with their 2016 reunion announcement.

Their music is straightforward, cool rock that has captivated countless fans, with total CD sales surpassing 10 million copies.

Many fans must have rejoiced and felt their hearts race at the news of their reunion.

Interestingly, the band name THE YELLOW MONKEY is a term that Westerners have used derogatorily toward people from Eastern Europe, but the band chose it to express their commitment to making distinctly Japanese rock.

Now, in celebration of their return to activity, please enjoy this playlist of Yemon’s songs.

The Yellow Monkey’s classic and popular songs (11–20)

MasqueTHE YELLOW MONKEY

A dramatic and weighty song with strongly Western, aestheticist elements.

In the middle section, the flowing classical guitar (electric in live performances) has Yoshii dancing on stage like flamenco, which heightens the song’s seductive, mysterious atmosphere.

It was a song performed at a live show held exclusively for the fan club.

Unfortunately, it has not been released.

Although it is currently hard to obtain, you can listen to it because it is included as bonus footage in the “Mekarauroko LIVE BOX DVD.”

PearlTHE YELLOW MONKEY

It’s a fast-paced track.

Yoshii with his slightly short hair looks cool.

There’s even a story that fans rushed to buy the Alexander McQueen watch Kazuya Yoshii wears in the music video.

The highlight is Yoshii Kazuya giving a suggestive smile against the all-white backdrop.

MY WINDING ROADTHE YELLOW MONKEY

In the PV, two patterns alternate: a courtroom-inspired backdrop and a disco with a spinning mirror ball that echoes the lyrics.

Kazuya Yoshii singing against the disco backdrop suits him incredibly well.

It’s a fun PV to watch, with details like Annie on drums playing almost in just his underwear and the guitar decked out with lights.

SPARKTHE YELLOW MONKEY

THE YELLOW MONKEY’s songs embody a drive to explore new possibilities and directions in life.

This track, released in July 1996, is a pivotal piece that became their first to break into the top three.

The lyrics are striking in the way they suggest that sudden events and coincidences can change one’s life.

In 2017, a newly recorded version was featured in a commercial starring Keisuke Honda and was included on the album THE YELLOW MONKEY IS HERE.

NEW BEST the same year.

Kazuya Yoshii in a white rider’s jacket and rubber-soled shoes also makes a cool, eye-catching impression.

It’s a great pick for when you want to liven up a karaoke session or when you find yourself at a crossroads in life!

SLEEPLESS IMAGINATIONTHE YELLOW MONKEY

This is a song included on BUNCHED BIRTH, which was released during their indie days.

In this track, Yoshii bangs on the tambourine the whole time—boasting that he “got good at it in the nightlife business”—and he really does play it skillfully, with a truly sensual touch.

THIS IS FOR YOUTHE YELLOW MONKEY

It’s a song that hints at male same-sex love.

Kazuya Yoshii’s acoustic guitar sounds beautiful.

The tune is gentle, but the arrangement changes partway through.

It was also used as the title of a tribute album and is popular at live shows, making it, in my opinion, a hidden masterpiece.
