[Enka] A special feature on female singers in their 30s: Kayō singers whose music goes beyond enka

Enka, a genre that lets you feel the heart and soul of Japan.

Even if you don’t usually listen to it, many people may have encountered it on the grand stage of the NHK Kōhaku Uta Gassen or through their grandparents.

In this article, we introduce female enka singers who, at the time of editing, are in their 30s, among those who deliver enka’s powerful and dazzling charm.

Some of them also sing songs that incorporate various flavors such as kayōkyoku (Japanese popular songs).

Many have blogs or post on social media themselves, which may help you feel closer to and more familiar with the world of enka.

Please use this as a guide when looking for your favorite enka singer!

It seems she studied Japanese dance from a young age, and she took third place in the Kyushu Junior Folk Song Competition.

Her older sister, Mika, was inspired by this and went on to win several folk song competitions.

Chiharu later worked as a model, but in 2010 she debuted as part of the Kuroki Sisters.

One of her biggest attractions is her stable vocal ability.

Enka singer Kaori Fujii, from Nakano Ward in Tokyo.

From a young age, she admired Namie Amuro and SPEED, and starting in second grade she devoted herself to dance lessons and vocal training.

She later enrolled at Toho Gakuen High School (Specialized Training), which allows students to engage in show-business activities, and during high school she worked as a reader model for magazines such as egg.

After stints as an idol and a guide vocalist, she made a late-blooming debut as an enka singer in 2018.

Her appeal lies in performances that are a feast for the eyes as well: her shows mix kayōkyoku and dance, and together with her beautiful looks, they offer enjoyment for both the ears and the eyes.
