[2026] Popular British Artists: Recommended Singer-Songwriters
There’s something about music made by British musicians that strangely fits the ears and hearts of Japanese listeners.
The slightly damp vocals and melodies, introspective lyrics, an air of aestheticism… You don’t even need to cite examples like Queen—who, in their early days, enjoyed higher popularity and recognition in Japan than in their home country—to say that UK rock and Japanese listeners are a perfect match.
This time, we’re highlighting popular British solo artists—rappers and singer-songwriters—from a fellow island nation that shares many similarities with Japan.
Centered on today’s hottest young talents while also including legendary veterans, we present a wide-ranging lineup that transcends eras.
It might even help you discover the influences behind your favorite Japanese artists.

[2026] Popular British artists, recommended singer-songwriters (31–40)
LaylaEric Clapton

Eric Clapton—known as “Slowhand,” one of Britain’s greatest guitarists and a highly acclaimed singer-songwriter—is a towering figure in music.
The intro riff to Layla is so famous that most people have heard it even if they don’t know Clapton by name.
While it’s hard to grasp the entirety of his long and legendary career that began in the 1960s, his solo career started in the 1970s.
After playing in several bands that have since become the stuff of legend throughout the ’60s, Clapton moved to the United States and released his first solo album, Eric Clapton, in 1970.
That same year, as Derek and the Dominos, he released the album Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs, which includes the aforementioned Layla.
Though he is a living encyclopedia of rock history, Clapton’s life has been far from smooth; he has faced many troubles, tragedies, and personal challenges.
Yet he has continued to create remarkable music, which is precisely why he remains such a revered figure.
Start with a best-of compilation featuring his famous tracks, and then be sure to explore Clapton’s 1960s career, when he was active in many influential bands.
Put Your Records OnCorinne Bailey Rae

Corinne Bailey Rae, a highly regarded singer-songwriter, has earned acclaim as a true talent.
Trained in classical music from a young age, obsessed with Led Zeppelin during her teenage years, and having spent a period making a living in jazz clubs, she brings a remarkably complex musicality shaped by these experiences.
Whether it’s R&B, jazz-inflected sounds, pop, or hard-driving rock, her appeal lies in offering a variety of genres within the work of a single artist.
WOMANJohn Lennon

Even more than 40 years after his shocking, untimely death, he remains a legendary figure of overwhelming influence: John Lennon.
As a member of the Beatles, he achieved feats that changed the course of popular music, and as a solo artist he continued to create remarkable work.
Many music fans can’t help but imagine what it would be like if Lennon were still alive today.
Since the Beatles’ breakup, Lennon is often discussed for his social and political activism beyond music, and there may be quite a few people who have actually only listened to songs like Imagine or Happy Xmas (War Is Over).
Armed with brilliant, intelligent lyrics and an exquisite melodic sensibility, Lennon broadened the possibilities of rock and pop through countless musical adventures, while also reminding us of the beauty of a simple “song.” I hope younger listeners, unbound by public image, will approach his work without preconceptions.
To experience the music of John Lennon—one of the world’s greatest singer-songwriters and one of the finest rock stars Britain has produced—in that way is a truly fortunate musical experience!
Back To BlackAmy Winehouse

Amy Winehouse possessed a wonderfully soulful, husky voice and a sound that modernized retro soul, jazz, and R&B, complemented by her strikingly 1960s beehive hair—an overwhelming presence that made her a beloved diva.
Yet she passed away at 27, an age fraught with dark lore in the music industry.
Back then, Amy’s scandalous private life drew so much attention that it became widely known even in Japanese living rooms.
Now, nearly a decade after her death in July 2011, I hope we can refocus on the musical achievements she left behind.
In the British scene of the mid-2000s and onward, when singers like Adele and Duffy—who were influenced by ’60s-style soul—made their debuts, Amy Winehouse, who had already debuted in 2003, can be seen as a pioneering figure.
She released only two original albums in her lifetime, but both are universally praised for their exceptional quality and remain timeless.
I recommend listening to her debut album Frank and her second album Back to Black first, and then moving on to the posthumous collection Lioness: Hidden Treasures.
Ballad Of The Mighty INoel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds

Noel Gallagher, the principal songwriter and guitarist of Oasis—the biggest British rock band born in the 1990s—and a solo artist who has continued to thrive since the band’s breakup.
A genius melodist who often sparks controversy with his outspoken remarks, Noel is beloved in Japan not only for his musical talent but also for his distinctive personality.
After leaving Oasis in 2009, he released his first solo album in 2011 under the name Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds.
Although Noel had already taken lead vocals on classics like Don’t Look Back in Anger during the Oasis era, it’s striking how, while delving even deeper into the appeal of band ensembles than in Oasis, he confidently delivers his own songs as a solo singer.
Since then, he has consistently released high-quality albums, all of which have topped the UK charts.
As fans, it’s also a joy that he frequently comes to Japan.
Even if you only know Oasis’s greatest hits, we’d love for you to give Noel’s solo work a listen!
