“Nope.
Nah—our young ones are coming along for sure.” This is what Tengen Uzui said to the Serpent Hashira, Obanai Iguro, when he decided to retire after the fierce battle with Upper Rank Six.
From this line, you can feel Tengen’s sense of responsibility as a Hashira, his trust in his juniors, and his resolve to entrust them with hope.
Having witnessed Tanjiro and the others’ talent and growth, Tengen was convinced that the Demon Slayer Corps would be in good hands.
It’s a line overflowing with the things he gained and the sense of accomplishment from staking his life in battle, as well as hope for a new future.
You don’t have to do anything anymore.
Uzui has three wives.
These words were addressed to one of them, Hinatsuru.
Disguised as a courtesan, Hinatsuru had infiltrated the red-light district and was sending Uzui information about the demon.
However, her cover was blown and she was captured.
Uzui rescued her from danger, but the battle was only just beginning… When Hinatsuru told him not to worry about her and to go after the demon, he responded with these words.
Although Hinatsuru, a former ninja, believed it was only natural to risk her life for the mission, Uzui would not allow it—he told her to survive and leave the district alive.
Uzui values his wives more than his own life.
I got chosen? Don’t mess with me.
There’s a scene where Gyutaro, seeing Tengen Uzui’s strength, resentfully says, “You’re someone chosen by talent.” In that moment, Tengen answers firmly, “Me, chosen? Don’t screw with me.” Tengen believes his strength doesn’t come from talent, but is built on blood-soaked effort and the sacrifices of the brothers who lost their lives during brutal training.
His words, laid bare with anger at Gyutaro’s disregard for life, are deeply moving.
You can feel his regret for the lives he couldn’t save and the resolve to carry everything forward.
I’ve boldly and clearly decided the order of lives.
This is the scene right before they head into the battle against Upper Rank Six, where Tengen Uzui tells his three wives, “I’ve decided on the order of lives, loud and clear.” He’s telling them that if anything happens, they should run before him and survive.
In his mind, the order of whose life comes first is: number one, his wives; number two, the civilians; and number three, himself.
No matter what happens, he’ll protect his beloved family, and he’ll shoulder the responsibility of his duty to protect the lives of the citizens.
It’s a line that conveys his strong sense of responsibility, as well as how much he cherishes his family.
Don’t just talk—prove it with a flashy show.
After the battle on Mount Natagumo, Tanjiro is taken to the Hashira Meeting.
There, the Hashira demand that he explain why, despite being a Demon Slayer, he is traveling with a demon.
Tanjiro desperately insists that Nezuko is his younger sister and that she does not harm humans.
However, the Hashira say they have never seen a demon who doesn’t attack people, so they can’t trust her and believe she should be killed.
While Uzui doesn’t make any extreme statements, he throws this line at Tanjiro and demands he prove it’s not just talk.
It was a memorable line that revealed both his love of flashiness and his cool-headed judgment.
Don’t be ashamed. Those who are alive are the winners.
Tanjiro and the others had infiltrated the red-light district to investigate demons, but when Zenitsu disappeared, they were ordered to withdraw.
Tanjiro tried to defy that order, and that’s when Uzui said this line to him.
Uzui was born into a family of shinobi and raised by a father who believed subordinates and family were expendable in pursuit of a goal.
Rejecting that, Uzui quit being a shinobi because he didn’t want to become that kind of person.
So these words likely come from a pure desire to keep Tanjiro and the others alive.
His usual behavior may be a bit much, but when it counts, he’ll protect you… It’s the kind of quote that makes you think, ‘I’d like to work under a boss like this.’
Think only about your own life.
There’s a line where Tengen Uzui tells the lower-ranked Tanjiro and the others, when they’re about to fall into a demon’s trap: “Just think about keeping yourselves alive.” Having seen many comrades lose their lives before joining the Demon Slayer Corps, Uzui understands the value of life more than anyone.
You can feel his kindness and true strength in these words—he doesn’t want them to throw their lives away with reckless actions.
Behind his flashy, confident exterior lies a strong conviction that as long as you’re alive, you can always start over.
