Even as adults, many of us still dream of one day playing the violin with elegance.

If you don’t find the music engaging, you won’t keep up with practice; but if it’s too difficult, you might give up quickly.

In this article, we’ve put together a list of pieces that are perfect for beginner violin practice.

We’ve included not only classical masterpieces, but also popular tunes that are favorites for violin performance.

These are all well-known songs, and there are plenty of beginner-friendly arrangements available, so you can feel confident starting out.

RomanceLudwig van Beethoven

It’s a relaxed, slow-tempo piece that’s easy even for beginners to play, but you’ll need solid practice beforehand if you plan to perform it in front of others.

I highly recommend it as a gateway piece for advancing from a novice level toward graduation.

Amaryllisfuransu min’yō

It was featured on NHK’s “Minna no Uta” and is also included in elementary school textbooks.

Many people have probably played it on the recorder.

It is said to have been composed by King Louis XIII of France.

The amaryllis is a large flower in the amaryllis family with a lily-like shape.

Wedding MarchFelix Mendelssohn

[Slow Demo Performance] Wedding March (Mendelssohn) Shinozaki Violin Method 2 Wedding March (F. Mendelssohn) [slow-tempo]
Wedding MarchFelix Mendelssohn

One of the two marches often played for the bride and groom’s entrance or exit at weddings.

This Mendelssohn Wedding March is a piece from the incidental music to A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

Along with Wagner’s Wedding March, the “Bridal Chorus” from the opera Lohengrin, it is frequently used.

The original is a bit longer, but for beginning violinists, practicing just the famous phrases is more than sufficient.

It doesn’t require high positions and has an easy-to-follow melody, so listen to the piece on CDs or videos, learn it by ear, and work hard on your bowing.

Aim to perform it with the power of the triplets and a brilliant tone.

BourréeGeorg Friedrich Händel

The original piece is an Oboe Sonata (in F major, HWV 363a), and there are also arrangements for flute sonata.

This fourth piece is performed on various instruments such as piano and violin.

The bourrée is a dance that originated in France and Spain, and harpsichord pieces by Handel and Bach are well known examples.

Always With MeKimura Yumi

[Sheet Music Released] “Always With Me” from Spirited Away (Violin & Piano) — Ghibli pieces even beginners can play
Always With MeKimura Yumi

I’d like to introduce a song by Yumi Kimura, who performed the theme song for Studio Ghibli’s masterpiece Spirited Away.

Born in Osaka Prefecture, Kimura is a singer and composer who studied abroad in the United States alone at age 16, majoring in piano at California State University.

After returning to Japan, she aimed to become a vocalist, but temporarily gave up due to health issues.

She then explored a new musical path while studying meditation and the relationship between body and mind.

This work carries a profound message centered on dreams, hope, and the cycles of life, with the power to heal and encourage listeners.

Released in July 2001, the song is also recommended for beginner violinists.

Its gentle melody and heartfelt lyrics will help boost your practice motivation.

To practice a piece with flats on the violin, you’ll need knowledge of accidentals.

Be careful not to habitually add a sharp to F from your scale practice.

The Re–Mi–Fa interval becomes narrower.

The melody itself is simple, so you’ll be able to play it in no time!

Minuet in G majorLudwig van Beethoven

Composed by the great master of classical music, Beethoven, this piece is recommended for those who have just started playing the violin.

Let’s play its beautiful melody to the elegant three-beat rhythm of a minuet.

Written around 1795, this early Beethoven work is a masterpiece that already showcases his talent.

Its delicate and graceful melodic lines are distinctive and soothing to listeners.

It’s a familiar piece often used in films and TV shows, which can boost your motivation to practice.

Why not practice slowly and carefully, and immerse yourself in Beethoven’s world?

Among gavottes, this one is on the longer side.

It features beautiful slur passages reminiscent of trills, making it a great choice as an etude.

It’s also ideal for practicing staccato.

The ending is distinctive, with charming pizzicato arpeggios.
