[Trivia Quiz] Words That Are Actually Abbreviations
![[Trivia Quiz] Words That Are Actually Abbreviations](https://i.ytimg.com/vi/NyzAm_MATSk/sddefault.jpg)
In everyday life, many of the words we use as if they were obvious are actually abbreviations—quite a few people have probably had that experience.
You may even have discovered the original, unabbreviated term for the first time.
For example, the word den-sha (“train”) is itself an abbreviation of dendō kyakusha (“electric passenger car”), and looking into how such abbreviations started can be pretty interesting.
A trivia quiz themed around abbreviations that everyone commonly uses is sure to be a hit at events like welcome parties.
The more surprising the better, so do some solid research and try creating a quiz.
New Employee Profile Quiz
Here’s a quiz that both introduces the new members and gets everyone excited—the “Profile Quiz”! For example, you might ask, “Which of the following is Newcomer A’s hobby?” and everyone answers together.
Since we’ll be sharing good times and tough times with these teammates from now on, we want to get to know them, right?
Creative Kanji Quiz

When it comes to kanji-based quizzes, a variety of ideas come to mind: quizzes on difficult-to-read kanji, fill-in-the-blank puzzles for two-character and four-character compounds, synonym and antonym quizzes, and so on.
What we’re introducing here, however, is a “creative kanji quiz.” As the name suggests, “creative kanji” involves producing original characters by combining actual kanji and the like.
There’s even a contest hosted by The Sankei Shimbun and the Shirakawa Shizuka Institute of East Asian Characters and Culture at Ritsumeikan University, so quite a few people may have tried coming up with their own creative kanji.
For a quiz, you can use creative kanji that have actually won awards, or you can intentionally use original creations devised by the quizmaster.
The latter puts the quizmaster’s sense to the test and might make things even more exciting!
General Knowledge Quiz

It’s not that you’re in trouble if you don’t understand this; rather, if you can solve all of it, you could be called a trivia master, so you can try it without feeling pressured.
That said, if you don’t understand any of it at all, there might be various issues to consider…

Many older folks may be surprised and ask, “You can’t read this kanji?”—but how many of the kanji with the ‘fish’ radical can they read themselves? Since age doesn’t matter much here, this is a quiz you can definitely enjoy thinking about together in a lively, fun way.
