CAFOANIMALS AS LEADERS

Steve Vai, with his astonishing and innovative use of the 7-string guitar, greatly influenced generations of guitarists—but are you familiar with Tosin Abasi, the Black guitarist who debuted in the late 2000s and shook the scene with his sorcerous 8-string technique? His three-piece band Animals as Leaders is one of the leading groups in the genre known as “djent,” characterized by deliberately shifting beat placement, distinctive rhythms, and the use of extended-range guitars to deliver complex riffs and dissonant textures.
Despite being a progressive instrumental act backed by outrageously advanced technique, their third album, The Joy of Motion (2014), scored a smash hit by reaching No.
23 on the U.S.
charts, earning them a reputation for balancing extreme innovation with commercial appeal.
Even as their sound bombards you with technique so incredible it makes you laugh in disbelief, it also has an addictive quality that keeps you hooked once you fall in.
With surprisingly catchy hooks and melodies scattered throughout, they’re a band well worth checking out for anyone looking to explore new musical frontiers!
JumpersSleater-Kinney

Sleater-Kinney is a girls’ trio from Olympia, Washington, formed in 1994 and widely beloved on the indie scene.
They made their debut in 1995 with their self-titled album Sleater-Kinney and have since released numerous acclaimed records, including Dig Me Out.
Notably, they have a distinctive lineup with no bass.
Their punkish, straightforward sound and socially conscious lyrics have continued to captivate many fans.
Their album The Woods, released on May 24, 2005, was selected by Rolling Stone as one of the 500 greatest albums.
Although they went on hiatus in 2006, they regrouped in 2014 and are now actively performing as a duo of the two original members.
BullheadBrian Melvin

Formed in Seattle in 1983.
They’re known for ferociously heavy riffs that obsess over sheer weight and slowness, and are even called the underground emperors of the U.S.
heavy metal scene.
They reportedly had ties with hometown peers Nirvana.
Since 2006, it seems they’ve been performing as a four-piece.
SanteriaSublime

Sublime, the leading ska-punk band born in Long Beach, California.
They fused ska with reggae, dub, hip-hop, and punk, creating a stew-like sound that won major popularity in the 1990s.
Their debut album, 40oz.
to Freedom, was released in 1992 and earned them a large following in the Los Angeles area.
Their self-titled third album, released in 1996, became a huge hit, selling six million copies in the United States alone, but it tragically became a posthumous release due to the sudden death of frontman Bradley Nowell before the album came out—a heartbreaking chapter in 1990s rock history.
Their musical style had a profound influence on later reggae and ska acts, and their distinctive sound continues to be loved by many fans today.
BEEP BEEPJuan De La Cruz

A hard rock band that represented the Philippines in the 1970s.
Leader and guitarist Wally Gonzales is a godfather-like figure in the Filipino rock scene.
The mismatch between their orthodox hard-rocking guitar riffs and Tagalog vocals is incredibly cool.

Freak SceneDinosaur Jr.

Dinosaur Jr., the living encyclopedia of US alternative rock who have been drawing attention from younger music fans thanks to the documentary film Freakscene, which was released in Japan in March 2022.
Centered around J Mascis—dubbed the “Apathetic Overlord” for his eccentric personality and plaintive vocals—the band’s original lineup is known to include bassist Lou Barlow, who later gained popularity with projects like Sebadoh, and drummer Murph.
Emerging from the 1980s hardcore scene, they were recognized by Sonic Youth, charismatic figures in the indie world, and signed to the venerable SST Records, releasing two classic albums: You’re Living All Over Me and Bug.
Lou later left the band; after that, they made their major-label debut and found commercial success, but Murph also departed, and the group effectively became a J Mascis solo project until they disbanded in 1997.
A few years later, in 2005, the original members reunited, and at their own pace they remain very much active today.
Their trademark—heart-wrenching melodies drifting through Mascis’s ear-splitting, roaring guitar—is truly one-of-a-kind, and it’s worth noting the crucial role they played in shaping 1990s alternative rock.
If you want to savor their pop appeal, try 1991’s Green Mind; if you’d like to experience the powerful band ensemble of the original trio, the two aforementioned indie-era albums are highly recommended!
John Rock And Roll SinclairTHE DOGS

A trio (including one female) that inherits the feral bloodline of Detroit’s thunderous rock.
Their jagged riffs and biting vocals are the very image of Detroit’s mad dogs.
