While singing in English might feel a bit intimidating, many people probably still harbor a longing to try it.

In this article, we’ve selected songs from film scores and Western pop music that are perfect for choral singing in English.

It’s easy to focus on how it sounds—thinking things like “I have to get close to a native accent”—but the top priority is understanding the song and uniting with your fellow singers to create music together!

Treasure your desire to sing choral pieces in English and dive into practice.

We also touch on the meaning of the lyrics and the films in which these songs appear, so please use this as a reference.

[Choral Songs You Can Sing in English] Recommended Pieces for Choir Competitions, Too! (21–30)

Hail Holy QueenDeloris Van Cartier

Sister Act – Hail Holy Queen (Deloris and The Sisters)
Hail Holy QueenDeloris Van Cartier

Sister Act, a classic film that continues to be loved by many viewers, is a heartwarming music-centered movie in which a struggling singer transforms a convent choir so dramatically that she gradually gains recognition from the townspeople and the convent community.

The film features numerous iconic songs, and among them, the most memorable is surely Hail Holy Queen, the first piece performed by the newly evolved choir.

Although it’s a traditional Christian hymn, this rendition is arranged with a decidedly groovy and lively vibe.

As a choral piece, some parts feature frequent improvisational embellishments, but the basic main melody is fairly easy to sing—so consider adding it to your repertoire.

ABCThe Jackson 5

From the title alone, it gives off a school-themed vibe, so this is my recommendation as a choral piece.

It’s a nostalgic number released in 1970 by The Jackson 5, which included a young Michael Jackson.

It’s been used in commercials and is a song almost everyone has heard at least once.

The quintessential Motown sound would really stand out at a choral competition, and it would be great to sing it with some energy, clapping hands and stamping feet.

You Raise Me UpSECRET GARDEN

Celtic Woman – You Raise Me Up (Live)
You Raise Me UpSECRET GARDEN

This song, which became well-known in Japan after being covered in 2005 by the Irish Celtic music group Celtic Woman, was originally composed in 2002 by Secret Garden, a duo from Ireland and Norway.

With lyrics about how you give me strength, it seems perfect for events like school choral competitions.

Its grand, uplifting feel pairs wonderfully with the choral format.

Ellie My LoveRay Charles

A song by Ray Charles, known as one of the musicians who established soul music with roots in Black music such as R&B, jazz, blues, and gospel.

It’s a cover of the signature song ‘Itoshi no Ellie’ by the Japanese rock band Southern All Stars, and its jazzy arrangement, distinct from the original, is wonderfully soothing.

Using a widely known pop song in an English version is a stylish approach, making it a great choice for choral performances as well.

Even in English, you can tell it has a superb melody—truly a masterpiece that stands out in J-pop history.

Let It BeThe Beatles

Despite their relatively short 10-year career, the legendary rock band The Beatles has continued to influence musicians worldwide even after their breakup.

This is their 22nd single, also known as the last single released during their active years—and it’s a famous song that even those unfamiliar with The Beatles have likely heard at least once.

Beyond its beautiful melody, the piano—along with the chord progression—leaves a particularly strong impression.

It’s sure to stand out if used as a choral piece, making it a perfect choice for competitions and festivals.

A timeless classic.
