[2026] Cute and Cool! A Guide to Western Girl Bands (31–40)
We Got The BeatThe Go-Go’s

With a name that already sounds catchy, the Go-Go’s are a legendary band that scored hits in the early ’80s—when prejudice against all-female bands was still common—and are known as pioneers for later girl bands.
Their debut album, Beauty and the Beat, released in 1981, earned the honor of becoming the first album by an all-female band to reach No.
1 on the U.S.
charts.
The record is packed with upbeat, feel-good pop songs, including hits like Our Lips Are Sealed, co-written with Terry Hall—famous for his work with The Specials—and the brisk, riff-driven We Got the Beat.
Although the band’s run was relatively short, lead vocalist Belinda Carlisle later achieved major success as a solo artist.
Stop PretendingThe Pandoras

They weren’t blessed with commercial success, and unless you’re quite knowledgeable about genres like punk or garage, you might not know them—but they’re a very compelling all-girl band.
They’re also known for having Kim Shattuck—who later found success as the vocalist and guitarist of The Muffs—on bass.
One of their defining traits is that their sound changed drastically depending on the era: early on they played ’60s-style garage punk, in the middle period they emphasized pop melodies, and in their later years they moved closer to LA metal.
The central figure, Paula Pierce, and the aforementioned Kim Shattuck have both passed away, but if you’re interested in cult favorite girl bands, definitely give them a listen.
Cherry BombThe Runaways

Debuting at an average age of just 16 during the 1970s—often called the golden age of rock—the Runaways became pioneers of the all-girl band.
Their brief yet striking career is candidly portrayed in the 2010 film The Runaways.
Lead vocalist Cherie Currie’s provocative outfits and the band’s accessible, pop-tinged rock made them wildly popular in Japan even more than in their home country.
Beyond their tours in Japan, the renowned photographer Kishin Shinoyama even released a photo book centered on Currie.
After the band broke up, guitarist-vocalist Joan Jett and fellow guitarist Lita Ford each went on to successful solo careers.
Edge Of A Broken HeartVixen

This is Vixen, the American four-piece girls’ band famed as the female version of Bon Jovi.
Formed in 1980 at the height of the hard rock and heavy metal boom, they stirred up the scene with their alluring, flamboyant looks.
They debuted in 1988, and their strong musicianship, catchy melodies, and the delicate expressiveness unique to women captured the hearts of many.
The band continues to perform today in various lineups, so be sure to explore their many classic songs!
ElephantsWarpaint

They are a band that has consistently pursued experimental sounds completely removed from the commercial scene, captivating music fans with a singular identity among girl bands since the late 2000s.
Based in Los Angeles, they also drew attention early on when John Frusciante—renowned guitarist of the Red Hot Chili Peppers—lavished them with praise.
Their musical style is often described as art rock, characterized by a sound world unconstrained by the orthodox rock band format.
At the same time, within their unique sound—psychedelic, dreamy, and at times complex—listen for the shimmering, fantastical, and beautiful melodies that emerge.
