Ballads are known for having many melodies and lyrics that really hit you in the heart.
Suddenly, but do you know the clear definition of a ballad?
In fact, the definition of a ballad is quite ambiguous: as long as it’s a “story-like song,” it can be considered a ballad regardless of the melody.
So this time, we’ve picked out some classic ballad masterpieces.
Unlike in Japan, Western ballads feature a wide variety of melodies, so be sure to check them out.
The first half features famous classics, but the second half includes lesser-known yet incredibly tasteful tracks.

Save The Best For LastVanessa Williams

Vanessa Williams is a multi-artist who excels as a musical theater performer, actress, and singer.
She’s well-known both as a singer and as an actress.
Among her many songs, “Save The Best For Last” is especially popular.
In terms of genre, it falls somewhere between pop and adult contemporary.
The melody is very catchy, making it easy to listen to.

Eblouie par la nuitZAZ

Zaz, one of the most beloved artists in France.
Deeply inspired by jazz and chanson, she’s a powerhouse singer who occupies a position reminiscent of where Édith Piaf once stood.
Among her ballads, the one I especially recommend is Eblouie par la nuit.
The lyrics are artistic and abstract, so interpretations will vary, but the melody seems to appeal to a distinctly special sensibility.
It feels like true art—a very high-caliber piece—so be sure to check it out!
ShadowAshlee Simpson

A track released in 2004 by American artist Ashlee Simpson.
It sings about how she felt at 15, living in the shadow of her celebrity sister, Jessica.
The track was a hit in the United States, Australia, and various European countries.
CloserCorinne Bailey Rae

Corinne Bailey Rae, a singer-songwriter from the UK.
She’s gained popularity as an artist with a wide range of songwriting abilities, from poppy, laid-back melodies reminiscent of country music to stylish R&B-like tunes.
She originally played in a rock band and is said to have been strongly influenced by L7.
That’s hard to imagine given her current musical style.
Among her ballads, the one I especially recommend is “Closer.” It’s crafted as smooth, very mellow R&B, making it perfect for driving music.
I’m Still HereElisha La’Verne

Elisha La’Verne is one of the most talented artists on the UK R&B scene.
R&B has changed as time has gone on, and while today’s R&B often feels like just dance music, she delivers high-quality, authentic R&B.
She was an R&B singer active in the late ’90s, then stepped away from the scene for a while.
However, she made a comeback in 2011 and has continued to release sophisticated tracks up to the present.
Highly recommended for those who love R&B ballads!
