The Power Of The DreamCéline Dion

This is the song Celine Dion sang at the opening ceremony of the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta.

It was written, composed, and produced by David Foster and Babyface.

The chorus—Celine’s vocals with the soulful backing choir—gives you goosebumps! The song is about how everyone has potential and can make their dreams come true.

It’s the perfect track to listen to when you need a boost of power!

During the 2016 Rio Olympics, Mizuho Financial Group aired commercials in collaboration with the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Some of you may remember the ads featuring fencer Takahiro Shikine and para-badminton player Mamiko Toyoda.

The song used in those commercials was “Wake Me Up,” released in 2013 by the world-renowned music producer and DJ Avicii.

While an EDM track, it incorporates country-style guitar, and the melody—carried by Aloe Blacc’s rich, soaring vocals—is endlessly beautiful and deeply moving.

For athletes, whose daily lives can be described as battles with themselves, the song’s themes of conflict and struggle may be especially encouraging.

Having overcome global hardships, let’s watch the athletes’ outstanding performances with the overwhelming sense of uplift that this song brings to our hearts.

A Chance for HeavenChristopher Cross

Christopher Cross, who became a breakout star in the AOR genre with his 1979 debut hit “Ride Like the Wind,” is known for his pure, crystal-clear high tenor that feels cleansing just to listen to.

His 1984 release “A Chance For Heaven” served as the official theme song for the swimming events at the Los Angeles Olympics that same year.

The arrangement is wonderfully satisfying, moving from a serious, minor-key intro to a chorus that opens up with a touch of wistfulness.

The quintessentially ’80s synths and snare sounds are great, too.

While the title literally means “A Chance for Heaven,” the lyrics suggest that “heaven” symbolizes the victory one strives to achieve—so be sure to pay attention to their positive message.

It’s the kind of song that ramps up with a refrain pouring down.

It’s one of those overseas Olympic songs that are also used in Japan, right? I don’t dislike this type of song, but I’ve heard that the more accessible it is, the quicker you can get tired of it.

This might not be all that relevant, but I do want to help build excitement for the Olympics.

Alanis Morissette’s song “Wunderkind,” showcased at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics, features a grand, sweeping arrangement, yet the vocal line is surprisingly restrained.

As a result, it combines an epic feel with catchy elements—perfect qualities for music that enhances events like this.

It also has a somewhat calm vibe, making it a nice choice when you want to chill.

Be sure to give it a listen.
