Punishment games that amp up the fun at year-end parties—from hilariously gross to super embarrassing!

If you’re playing games at a year-end party, you can’t skip the penalty games, right? Still, when it comes time to actually do one, you might find yourself wondering, “What kind of penalty game would be good?” or “I can’t think of anything that would really hype everyone up…” If you’re having fun with friends or colleagues, you’ll want to pick a penalty that still feels like a penalty but gets everyone laughing—something in just the right balance.

In this article, we’ll introduce plenty of penalty game ideas perfect for year-end parties, from classics to slightly unusual twists.

Don’t forget to be considerate of others, and find ideas everyone can enjoy together!

Say your strengths

I tried turning Retort & Kiyo’s weaknesses into strengths.
Say your strengths

The loser of the penalty game has to announce their strengths in front of everyone! It’s easy to list your flaws, but boldly talking about your good points can be pretty embarrassing, right? Do you go for a joke to get laughs, or answer seriously to draw empathy… which would you choose?

smell a bad odor

As a quiz penalty, I smelled Konjuri’s socks and they were way too stinky [Konjuri King]
smell a bad odor

It’s a simple yet harsh penalty game where you bring something with an extremely strong smell close to the person’s nose and make them suffer.

Since they’ll likely try to quickly move away when they catch the scent, be sure to hold them firmly so they can’t escape, and let them endure the odor.

There are various prank stink sprays available for purchase, so using those is recommended.

Some people might be able to tolerate certain smells, so it could be interesting to switch up the types and compare how their reactions differ.

Show off an original signature pose

High-Speed Posing! Watch our models go all-out in a rapid-fire pose-off! [60 poses in 60 seconds]
Show off an original signature pose

For professional models it’s just ordinary, fashion-magazine-style posing.

But when amateurs go all out, it somehow becomes hilariously entertaining.

So why not make “model posing” a party penalty game? A funny twist is a challenge like “strike about 10 poses at high speed,” where it gets more and more ridiculous as they run out of ideas.

You can also take inspiration from JoJo-style poses or the comedy duo Kyuuton’s posing.

It works for any gender, so try it at a big year-end party with lots of people!

Speak after inhaling helium gas

I tried inhaling helium and screaming with a changed voice!
Speak after inhaling helium gas

Helium gas is a familiar party prop for livening things up in a fun, silly way.

If you only inhale it and talk, it just makes your voice high-pitched and cute, so it doesn’t really work as a punishment game on its own.

For example, you could have someone share an embarrassing confession in their helium voice, or have someone who isn’t good at singing belt out a karaoke song with that voice—adding a little twist like this can give it more of a punishment-game feel.

Be mindful of safety, though: inhaling too much can reduce oxygen and make it hard to breathe, so use it with care.

perform a rhythm-based comedy routine with full power

It’s embarrassing to go all-out performing a comedian’s rhythm routine, but I think it makes for a fun, hype-forcing punishment game.

Since rhythm routines are often done by comedy duos, make the punishment a two-person team as well.

The flow is: punishment decided ⇒ practice backstage ⇒ perform a few minutes later.

Use acts like 8.6-Byou Bazooka’s “Rassun Goréi,” Fujisaki Market’s “Rarararai Taiso,” Oriental Radio’s “Buyuden,” and 2700’s “Look at My Right Elbow, Left Elbow, Alternating” as references.

More recently, the members’ shiritori routine and Linda Color ∞’s bits have been going viral on TikTok, so it could get everyone fired up!

Driver’s license photo reveal

[Leaked] Aren’t YouTubers’ driver’s license photos always hilarious?
Driver's license photo reveal

Let’s show off our driver’s license photo! Showing your license photo would probably rank among the top punishments you’d want to avoid, right? Why is it that license photos are so hilariously unsatisfying that you want to avoid showing them at all costs? This punishment is all about having to show something you’d really rather keep to yourself.

Especially if you don’t like your photo, you’d never imagine showing it to everyone—just thinking about it is embarrassing.

The nice thing is that almost everyone has one, so there’s no prep needed.

It’s easy and highly recommended.

Russian roulette takoyaki

I made a huge batch of takoyaki and tried Russian roulette lol
Russian roulette takoyaki

A common twist is to change the filling so it’s not octopus—mixing in ultra-spicy pieces is a classic.

People often slip a “bad” one into a batch of regular takoyaki and play it like Russian roulette.

Beyond super-spicy, you can try all kinds of variations by adding ingredients or seasonings that you’d think would never go with takoyaki.

If you eat without knowing what flavors are inside, the unexpected tastes can deliver a real shock—perfect for big reactions!
