[Childcare] Recommended circuit competition ideas for a sports day for 2-year-olds

At nursery and kindergarten sports days, there are lots of fun circuit activities designed for two-year-olds! Here, we’ll introduce circuits that two-year-olds can enjoy.

By racing together with a parent or aiming for the goal while cooperating with friends, everyone’s bonds will grow stronger.

Circuits also let children enjoy moving their bodies by running and jumping.

Put on some cheerful music and make it a memorable sports day together with the kids! We hope everyone has a great time.

Handmade ball circuit

[Ages 1–2] Can You Predict the Movement? Handmade Ball Play
Handmade ball circuit

Let’s use a variety of balls! Here are some ideas for a handmade ball circuit.

Prepare palm-sized balls, large balls you can hold with both hands, newspaper, cushioning material, tape, and bags or baskets big enough to hold the balls.

Try events like rolling balls along the floor or collecting balls in bags or baskets—use balls of different sizes and materials to build spatial awareness through play! Using balls that differ in weight and texture will also stimulate children’s senses.

Give it a try!

Goldfish Migration Circuit

Tomobe Kindergarten Sports Day Event Description No. 6: “Goldfish Moving Operation”
Goldfish Migration Circuit

Finish together as parent and child! Here’s an idea for a Goldfish Migration Circuit.

You’ll need homemade scoops (poi), two kiddie pools, goldfish made from colored plastic bags, and red-and-white flags.

Many children may feel nervous in the unusual atmosphere of a sports day, right? Participating in the event together with a parent can help ease those nerves a bit.

This event requires teamwork between parent and child! Let’s successfully move the goldfish while calling out to each other.

The cute costumes are another highlight, too!

Circuit to train the soles of the feet

Two Foot-Strengthening Activities: Foot Sole Circuit & Foot Art #Childcare #IndoorPlay
Circuit to train the soles of the feet

Sharpen your senses! Here are some circuit ideas to train the soles of the feet.

Prepare cone cushions, yarn, decorative balls, craft glue or tape, a glue gun, construction paper, cleaning sponges, and round stones.

Attach each material to the construction paper by type.

It’s also a good idea to use items found at your preschool or home, as well as recycled materials.

By feeling differences in texture and temperature with the bottoms of their feet while playing, and by walking over the materials to brace themselves and maintain balance, children can also improve their motor skills.

Circuit of/for interlocking mats

@mammybear_

Using 100-yen shop interlocking mats and non-slip plates, I made a bumpy road for circuit play. It doesn’t take up much space and is easy to put away.ChildcareMade with items from a 100-yen shop#Circuit PlayChildren's playRecommended

Let’s make a bumpy road! Here are some ideas for a circuit course using interlocking foam mats.

You’ll need interlocking mats from a 100-yen shop, a utility knife, small bowls, and tape.

First, cut the mats into circular shapes.

Next, fit the bowls into the holes and secure them with tape.

Finally, flip the mats over, and you’re done! The key is to place the bowls to match a child’s stride.

Interlocking mats are great because you can assemble the course in any shape you like!

Circuit of the large cube

Circuit of the large cube

Let’s get moving while we play! Here are some circuit ideas using large blocks.

All you need are large blocks.

Many kids love building houses or making tunnels with big blocks, right? Try adapting these ideas into a circuit course.

A tunnel with clear windows is unique and fun, letting kids pass through with excitement.

Both the children going through the tunnel and those watching will feel the thrill.

Since there’s a chance of bumping faces or falling, be sure to take precautions when using large blocks for physical activities.

Flag Race

Yusei Sports Day 2: Event Go! Anpanman
Flag Race

How about a flag race for your sports day? In the video, infants use flags featuring their favorite characters.

After starting, they choose the flag they like and head to the finish line.

It’s such a cute event, especially when they’re thinking, “Which one should I pick?” For preschoolers, you could adapt it to use a single flag like beach flags, with a clear win/lose rule—the first person to grab the flag wins—which would make it even more exciting.

It also works well as a parent–child activity, so please use it as a reference.

Mini triathlon

Rita, age 2 – Parent-child event at the sports day
Mini triathlon

We’d like to introduce a parent-child event modeled after a triathlon.

This is a parent-child activity: first, transform into a rabbit and make a lively start by jumping! Next, jump over the big box in front of you and crawl through the tunnel made of streamer tape.

After you pass through, the guardian gives the child a piggyback ride, and once you grab the prize medal, you’re at the finish line! Feel free to customize the events leading up to the finish according to the children’s interests and attention.

For preschoolers, trying it solo is also recommended.
