[Childcare] Recommended circuit competition ideas for a sports day for 2-year-olds

At nursery and kindergarten sports days, there are lots of fun circuit activities designed for two-year-olds! Here, we’ll introduce circuits that two-year-olds can enjoy.

By racing together with a parent or aiming for the goal while cooperating with friends, everyone’s bonds will grow stronger.

Circuits also let children enjoy moving their bodies by running and jumping.

Put on some cheerful music and make it a memorable sports day together with the kids! We hope everyone has a great time.

Mini triathlon

Rita, age 2 – Parent-child event at the sports day
Mini triathlon

We’d like to introduce a parent-child event modeled after a triathlon.

This is a parent-child activity: first, transform into a rabbit and make a lively start by jumping! Next, jump over the big box in front of you and crawl through the tunnel made of streamer tape.

After you pass through, the guardian gives the child a piggyback ride, and once you grab the prize medal, you’re at the finish line! Feel free to customize the events leading up to the finish according to the children’s interests and attention.

For preschoolers, trying it solo is also recommended.

Milk Carton Circuit

Shuwa-shuwa Honey Lemon 350ml – Sharou

Make it with everyday materials! Here are some circuit course ideas using milk cartons.

All you need are milk cartons and tape.

After cutting the cartons, connect them using an accordion fold.

They can be used as lane dividers, and it’s also fun to incorporate them into activities by putting organza fabric or colorful balls inside the cartons.

For children with allergies, using juice or tea cartons instead of milk cartons is a safer option.

Give it a try!

Picture-Matching Race

Children of Light Sports Day: Obstacle Race for 2-Year-Olds
Picture-Matching Race

We’d like to introduce an event where you can really feel how much the children have grown—one that will make you think, “They can do all this now!” At the start, the children jump through a row of hula hoops, cross a ladder, and slide down a slide, overcoming obstacles while moving their bodies energetically.

After that, they choose three cards from a large selection, bring them to their caregivers, and work together to assemble them like a puzzle to complete a single picture.

It’s the perfect activity for two-year-olds, whose desire to do things on their own is blossoming and whose range of abilities is rapidly expanding.

Balance Ball Circuit

7 Balance Ball Exercises Parents and Kids Can Do Together
Balance Ball Circuit

Here are some ideas for a circuit using a balance ball.

All you need to prepare is a balance ball.

Many people may think of it as something adults use for rehabilitation or training, but there are plenty of fun ways to play with a balance ball, so I highly recommend it! Of course, it’s great for practicing balance and strengthening the core, but you can also incorporate activities suited to each child’s stage of development—like crawling under a springy, bouncy balance ball or clinging to it tightly and using their whole body.

Newspaper Spiderweb Circuit

[Ages 0–5] Let’s play boldly! Use the whole room to make a spider web!
Newspaper Spiderweb Circuit

Tear it! Stick it! Crawl through and play! Here’s an idea for a newspaper spiderweb circuit.

You’ll need plastic ribbon (suzuran tape), newspaper, and tape.

This is a great idea when you want to include crawling movements in your circuit.

Some children find tunnels challenging because they’re dark and long.

By tearing and sticking newspaper as part of everyday activities, you can naturally encourage crawling movements! The making process also stimulates children’s creativity—what a wonderful idea.

Let’s go to the park.

First post in a while! The daycare class had their sports day last Saturday. Since there was a parent-child event, I could only record a video of my eldest daughter... 😭 Everyone did their best ❤

How about incorporating children’s favorite playground activities into a sports day event? In this event, the course is designed like a park, and the children make their way through various obstacles.

Crawling through tunnels, jumping, and hanging, they can move their bodies to the fullest while feeling as if they’re at the playground.

By preparing obstacles that match the children’s abilities, the parents watching can also appreciate their kids’ growth.

Two-Foot Jump Challenge! Circuit

At Hachiman Nursery School (Fukui City), the Elephant Class (2-year-olds) had a movement activity in the hall! They enjoyed two-footed jumps, the balance beam, and the slide.
Two-Foot Jump Challenge! Circuit

Put your feet together and jump with all your might! This is a circuit play activity where you line up sticks with spaces between them and place round mats for landing between the sticks, so kids can progress by jumping over each stick.

Many children may feel that jumping with both feet is a bit scary at first.

It’s a good idea to start by simply stepping over the sticks, and once they get used to it, have them try jumping.

A two-footed jump involves coordinated actions—bending and straightening the knees, lifting the heels, and pushing off the ground with the toes—and is very important in the course of physical development.

It’s great if kids can master it naturally while having fun.
