Indoor activities that delight 2-year-olds. Enjoy the fun inside on rainy days!

We’ve put together a collection of fun indoor activities that 2-year-olds will love.

By age two, children’s motor skills have developed, and they become much more active.

Many kids love playing outside, and once they head out, it can be hard to get them to come back home, right?

It’s wonderful when children are full of energy, but when they have a cold or the weather is bad, no matter how much they say “I want to go outside!” you just can’t take them out…

I’m sure many parents are struggling with “constant fussing!” in those moments.

In this article, we’ll introduce recommended indoor activities you’ll want to know about for times like these.

We’ve gathered activities that 2-year-olds will be totally absorbed in, so please use them as a reference and have fun playing together.

The game everyone has surely tried at least once: coloring.

It’s something both little kids and adults can enjoy.

These days, there are even coloring books made for adults.

For a two-year-old, the idea of using the same colors they see or separating areas by color doesn’t exist yet, so let them color however they like.

They’ll be delighted if it features their favorite characters!

How about having everyone enjoy “playing instruments” together? Try freely playing simple instruments like tambourines, castanets, or bells along with the music.

You can play music from a CD, or perform along with a piano accompaniment.

Songs from children’s programs would likely make it especially exciting.

Balloon badminton

On hot days, play indoors! Let's play balloon badminton♪

Let’s try playing ‘badminton’ with a balloon.

For badminton rackets, use paper plates with chopsticks taped or glued on as handles.

You can decorate them cutely or draw your favorite pictures on the plate part.

Since balloons don’t hurt when they hit you, this is a perfect game for little kids.

Colorful balloons—kids love them, right? Since they’re hard to blow up, how about having an adult inflate them and then playing with the balloons? They’re light, won’t hurt if they hit you, and are safe.

Even just tossing them is fun, because they float around with soft, unpredictable movements.

Imitation play

Let’s try “mimic play” by using our bodies to act out the characteristics of various animals and insects.

For a snail, stick your fingers out from your head to make horns; for a dog, get on all fours and bark like “woof, woof.” Show an example and encourage them to imitate and play along.

Putting on some music should make it even more fun to move around.

bowling

On hot days, indoor play is the way to go☆ Plastic Bottle Bowling

Let’s try playing “bowling” indoors using plastic bottles! Decorate plastic bottles with colored paper or masking tape to make 10 pins.

Set them up just like in regular bowling and roll a rubber ball or similar to knock them down.

It’s even more fun if you make the pins together, too.

Playing with plastic raffia (Suzuran tape)

Let’s adapt the ways we play to suit children’s development! Here are some ideas for playing with suzuran tape.

Suzuran tape is a thin plastic tape known for its colorful appearance.

Because the material is light and flexible, you can cut it with scissors, tie it, or weave it, allowing for all kinds of creative variations and uses in different games.

This time, let’s try making a suzuran tape curtain, a suzuran tape “bath,” and suzuran tape pom-poms.

It sounds like these activities will spark excitement and fun.
