[October] Useful for childcare! Autumn craft ideas, Part 2

October brings a stronger sense of autumn as the climate shifts after summer.

For teachers who are thinking, “I want to enjoy autumn-specific crafts with the children!”, we’re introducing perfect craft ideas.

From Halloween-themed ghosts and pumpkins to fall naturals and seasonal treats like fallen leaves, acorns, mushrooms, and grapes, we’ve gathered a wide range of ideas!

We also share fun ways to use materials that will greatly expand children’s worlds, so please use them for inspiration.

Because we mainly introduce ideas for creating works that allow children to freely express their individuality, we refer to them as “seisaku” (craft/creation) in the text.

[October] Fall Craft Ideas You Can Use in Childcare, Part 2 (1–10)

Fallen leaf art

Autumn activities for childcare: How to make fallen-leaf art
Fallen leaf art

Let’s make leaf art using the fallen leaves you picked up on a walk! Cut cardboard into the shape of a hedgehog and glue the leaves onto it.

It might be easier for children if you start by spreading glue over the cardboard first.

Once there’s no more space to stick leaves directly, apply glue to the leaves themselves and attach them.

Using leaves in a variety of colors—red, yellow, brown—will give it a lovely autumn feel.

Place a weight on top to dry, and it’s finished!

Acorn Rolling

Here’s a craft idea for making an “acorn roller” after you’ve collected acorns.

Attach construction paper to a piece of cardboard and create a path for the acorns to roll down.

At the end of the course, attach a cup to catch the acorns.

Finish by decorating the surroundings with squirrels, mushrooms, and leaves made from construction paper.

Any kind of course is fine, so it could be fun to use a classroom wall to create a big course together with the children.

If the acorns don’t roll well, discuss it together and try adjusting the course’s position.

Autumn Fruits Made with Various Techniques

Apples, pears, persimmons, grapes, and Japanese pears.

There are surprisingly many fruits that are in season in autumn, aren’t there? The children will surely have tried at least one of them.

Here’s a craft idea to make various autumn fruits using different techniques.

With methods like finger painting, decalcomania, wet-on-wet painting, brushing art, and bubble art, you can create fruits that look absolutely delicious.

Be sure to make them with the children and use them for autumn hanging decorations or wall displays.

Stylish owl made with torn paper

Here’s a craft idea for making an owl using a brown envelope! First, tear your favorite origami paper into long, thin strips, then paste them from the middle of the envelope downwards.

It’s recommended to use a variety of colors.

Once the origami pieces are attached, add the prepared face parts and beak, and draw the eyes.

Stuff the envelope lightly with crumpled paper or similar material, close the flap, then press the center to sharpen the corners at the ends.

Your owl is complete! It’s also a good idea to draw guide lines on the face parts and beak and have the children cut them out themselves.

Grapes with a perfectly round stamp

Grapes are a popular autumn fruit among children.

Let’s express grapes using construction paper and stamps made from lactic acid drink containers.

First, as prep, cut out the overall shape of a grape cluster from construction paper.

Also prepare plenty of purple circles.

Using a variety of purple shades will make the final result look beautiful.

Have the children freely glue the circles onto the grape cluster, then use the lactic acid drink containers to stamp round shapes on top.

The overlap of the paper circles and the stamped circles creates an artistic finish.

Hang them up with purple raffia (suzuran tape) for display.

Grapes in bubble art

This is a grape craft made with bubble art.

Bubble art is a technique that uses bubbles created from a soap solution.

Mix detergent, water, and paint to make a colored soap solution, then blow through a straw to create bubbles.

Place the bubbles onto drawing paper to make patterns.

Once the bubbles dry, cut them out into grape shapes, and attach them to a grape backing sheet to finish.

Instead of a straw, you can also use a cut plastic bottle covered with cloth or netting as a substitute.

Rolling acorn with a marble run

Let’s make acorns you can create while playing by rolling marbles! First, cut brown construction paper into the shape of an acorn.

Next, roll marbles coated with paint across the paper.

If you place a tray or similar item under the paper, kids can work safely and comfortably.

Once patterns appear on the paper, cut out a cap shape and attach it to the acorn illustration.

Finally, use cut pipe cleaners to make arms and legs, draw a face, and you’re done! How about making some cute acorns that capture the feeling of autumn?
