Let’s make and play with handmade toys together with your three-year-old!

Making your own toys lets children experience the joy of creating original pieces and gives them a sense of satisfaction and accomplishment—there are so many benefits.

So this time, we’ve gathered ideas for DIY toys recommended for three-year-olds.

Everything uses familiar materials and involves simple tasks with few steps, making them easy for three-year-olds to try.

Have fun drawing freely, adding decorations, and creating a one-of-a-kind special toy together.

Merry-go-round! The horses that go round and round

[Easy Craft 040] Merry-Go-Round — The horses spin around at high speed! Merry-Go-Round
Merry-go-round! The horses that go round and round

Let’s make a toy where horses spin around like a merry-go-round.

For the base, use a paper bowl and a paper cup.

For the spinning mechanism, use a paper clip, a rubber band, a bead, a toothpick, and a wooden chopstick.

First, use an awl to make a hole in the center of the bottoms of both the paper bowl and the paper cup.

Straighten the paper clip, then bend one end into a hook shape.

Thread a bead onto a rubber band, hook one end of the rubber band onto the paper clip’s hook, and pass it through from the bottom of the paper cup.

On the other end of the rubber band, insert the wooden chopstick so it won’t slip out.

Next, pass the clip up through the bottom of the paper bowl, stack it with the paper cup, then remove the hook and insert a toothpick as a stopper.

Finally, attach paper with horse illustrations to both ends of the chopstick, and you’re done.

Great for kids’ crafts too! It’s a colorful project finished by repurposing materials that would normally be thrown away.

You’ll need two plastic bottles, a toilet paper roll, tissues, three sheets of colored paper, a pen, scissors, tape, and a thin stick.

In the video, 500 ml bottles are used, but changing the size gives it a different look and makes it more fun.

It’s also a good idea to make it together with a parent or teacher, tailored to the child’s age!

yo-yo

Let's make a yo-yo by collecting acorns, nuts, and more!

Yo-yos are great for kids who want to play with sounds! They’re easy to make: put acorns or other small items into two bowl-shaped cups, stick them together, and secure them with tape.

You can use nuts you picked up outside or things you have at home like plastic beads.

Try putting different items inside and enjoy how the sounds change.

Turtle Blocks

Turtle Blocks

Let’s try a stacking block competition you can make and play with kids.

Using materials you have at home—like thick paper, colored paper, and plastic bottle caps—you can create colorful building blocks.

You can design them as turtles or adapt other familiar shapes—anything is OK.

Once you have the thick paper and colored paper, cut and paste the shapes you want to design and start making them.

It’s fun to vary the sizes a little, too.

When your design is ready, attach a plastic bottle cap to the back to complete each piece.

Make lots of pieces, stack them up, and enjoy a game competing to see how high you can build.

This is an indoor activity where you use colorful construction paper to make triangles of various sizes and combine them to complete pictures and shapes.

Children can work at their own pace and freely, which helps them enjoyably develop concentration, spatial awareness, and creativity.

Because there are few chances to fail and it’s easy to experience success, it’s also effective for boosting self-esteem.

The materials are simple and you can start right away, which is a big plus.

With a little ingenuity, kids can create their favorite animals, vehicles, or even story worlds—so adults, too, should dive in and enjoy it together!

Have you ever made a handmade toy using a paper cup? Here, I’d like to share an idea kids can play with together and love: the “Jumping Flower.” It’s very simple to make—just cut slits into a paper cup and fold them toward the center.

It’s easy to play with, too: press the cup down from the top, and it pops up with a fun springy bounce! Since it looks like a flower, making it in various colors also makes it nice for display.

Try making it together during parent-child time and let your children’s smiles blossom!

Musical Instrument Crafting: Guitar

Musical Instrument Crafting: Guitar

We’d like to introduce a DIY musical-instrument craft: a guitar you can play once it’s finished.

Prepare four paper cups, three rubber bands, a felt-tip pen, tape, and scissors.

First, place the bottoms of two paper cups together and secure them with tape so they don’t shift.

Next, make three slits in the rim of each of the remaining two paper cups.

Insert these slit cups onto the taped-together cups, and hook the three rubber bands onto the slits so they don’t cross over like an X.

Finally, pluck the rubber bands to check that they make sound—that’s it! The steps are simple, so give it a try!
