Easy origami acorn folding method

Acorns that fall under big trees or blend in with fallen leaves in autumn.

Their shapes are charming and unique—some are long and slender, some are plump and round, some are large—so many children can’t help but get absorbed in picking and collecting them.

How about folding those unique acorns with origami and having some fun? In this article, we introduce ways to fold acorns with origami, from simple versions that even small children can enjoy to three-dimensional acorns suitable for elementary school kids.

If you tend to avoid real acorns because they might have bugs, try enjoying them with your child using origami instead!

As an autumn origami motif, I recommend acorns! Their round, cute look makes them perfect for wall decorations or as little ornaments to bring a fall atmosphere to your space.

Once you’ve learned to fold a basic acorn shape, why not try a long, slender type as well? You can create a slimmer acorn by adjusting the width of your folds! For a nice rounded finish, folding in the corners at the end is the key.

If you’re making them with children, it’s also fun to draw patterns on the acorn caps or add faces!

Let’s make a cute acorn that looks like it’s wearing its cap low! If you make a bunch, they’ll be perfect for autumn decorations.

For the acorn’s cap, use the reverse side of the origami paper.

Adding lines on the cap or drawing a face will make it even cuter! As a variation, it might be fun to use the colored side of the paper for the cap as well.

Since it’s easy for anyone to make, why not include it in your child’s autumn origami play?

Simple acorn

This is an easy acorn origami that you can enjoy with small children! By making use of the white underside of the paper, you can create a basic acorn.

The steps are simple with no difficult folds at all, so kids are sure to get absorbed in it! Don’t just use brown—have fun making acorns in various colors like orange and yellow-green.

You could also draw patterns on the cap or add shine to the nut to make it look more realistic.

3D acorn

If you think 3D acorn origami looks difficult, you’re exactly the person I want to encourage to give it a try! The nut portion of this model is similar to the crane’s folding sequence up to a point, so if you’ve made a crane before, you’ll likely find it easy.

The key step is the final 3D assembly with glue.

The cap is made separately from another sheet of origami paper and is also formed in 3D.

Once you place the cap over the nut at the end, it’s complete.

If starting with smaller origami paper feels challenging, try using a standard-sized sheet first.

If you want to make an irresistibly cute acorn, here’s one you can create with just a single sheet of origami paper! Its round, plump shape doubles the cuteness.

You’ll have fun making it on your own or together with family and friends.

The steps are simple, so once you fold one, you might find yourself eager to make another! You can also use double-sided colored origami paper or draw a face to give it expressions for even more fun.

If you’ve got some extra time at home this fall, be sure to give it a try!

Acorn-chan

Let’s add a little twist to acorn origami, which is great for small children, and make a cute little acorn character! After folding the acorn out of origami paper, attach round stickers for eyes and draw a mouth.

You can let your child place the stickers freely and draw the expression, too.

Next, glue a chopstick to the back of the acorn along with pipe cleaners as the arms and legs, and your acorn character is complete! It’s easy to make and can be used like a paper puppet, so kids are sure to love it.

Acorn Frame

Acorn Frame

This acorn frame is perfect for autumn crafts! The frame is also practical, making it a great gift for friends and family on birthdays or Respect for the Aged Day.

You’ll use two sheets of origami paper—one patterned and one plain—glued together.

Fold the frame parts so the patterned paper ends up on the inside, make four of these pieces, and assemble them at the end.

It takes a bit of effort, but the nice thing is you don’t need any difficult techniques! The inside of the frame looks fine as is, or you could add another layer of patterned origami paper for an even lovelier finish.
