Animal sounds. Sound effects and natural ambience (21–30)
The cry of a rhinoceros

You might not think of rhinos as vocal animals, but it turns out they actually make sounds quite often.
During the mating season, they can reportedly call all day long, making low “boo… boo…” sounds.
Next time you see a rhino at the zoo, try watching closely to see if it’s making any calls.
Elephant sound

An elephant’s call is well known as the onomatopoeia “paooon,” but when you actually listen, it sounds more like a lower-pitched “whoooom!” The calls of large animals are really impressive.
In fact, elephants are said to be so strong that even lions won’t mess with them.
Chicken’s crowing

The crowing of roosters is loved around the world as a sound that announces the arrival of morning.
To Japanese ears it sounds like “kokekokko,” but in America they say “cock-a-doodle-doo!” I wonder if there’s an English language in the world of chickens, too?
mouse squeak

Mice make sounds like a small whistle, going “pip-pip.” They also go “chew-chew.” Even house mice and brown rats, which are treated as pests, actually have surprisingly cute voices.
When I looked into it, I found that most mice, regardless of species, make adorable sounds like little whistles.
Hyena sounds

Hyenas look like dogs, but they actually belong to the order Carnivora’s cat lineage.
That said, they don’t meow.
They make a “hoh-hoh-hoh” sound, similar to a chimpanzee’s threat call.
By the way, although hyenas have a reputation on the savanna for stealing prey from lions, they’re actually better hunters than lions, and it’s often the lions who do the stealing.
Panda sounds

Despite their cute appearance, pandas make very scary sounds.
Unlike the fearsome roars of lions or bears, theirs has a horror-movie vibe.
If I heard a panda’s voice echoing through a school at midnight… I would definitely cry.
If you’ve never heard a panda before… please prepare yourself before listening!
Sheep’s bleat

Sheep go “baaa,” but their voices are often lower than most people imagine.
If a dandy gentleman whispered “baaa” in a deep voice… would that be cool or just weird…? Maybe being gently whispered to in a sheep’s sweet voice would help you sleep better than counting sheep.
