[For seniors] Enjoy spring: April craft ideas

As spring arrives and the weather warms, colorful flowers bloom and we feel lighthearted.

We’d love for older adults—who often find it difficult to go out—to enjoy the cheerful spring atmosphere too.

In this article, we introduce craft ideas recommended for April.

We’ve prepared projects ranging from simple steps like folding origami and tearing paper to slightly more complex tasks like cutting predetermined shapes with scissors.

Please adjust the difficulty level to suit the older adults who will be doing the crafts.

Using the fingertips helps stimulate the brain, and completing a project can bring a sense of accomplishment and fulfillment.

Let’s bring a touch of spring into craft recreation activities.

Popup card

100-yen shop: Cherry blossom pop-up card made with a craft punch (with voice commentary)
Popup card

This is a pop-up card of a cherry blossom tree made using a cherry blossom-shaped punch you can get at 100-yen shops and the like.

Glue the blossoms on one by one with wood glue so that they overlap slightly.

Like making torn-paper or cut-and-paste collages, the steady, repetitive work may seem daunting at first, but don’t you find yourself getting absorbed and starting to enjoy it as you go? Once you’ve formed the shape of the cherry tree, attach it in the middle of the card so it pops up nicely.

It’s the kind of card you’ll want to send to someone during the spring celebration season.

Three-dimensional tulips

Tulips bloom with beautiful flowers as spring approaches.

Their colorful blossoms convey the excitement of warmer days.

This craft is like a three-dimensional picture inspired by a scene of blooming tulips, made by combining pieces of construction paper.

The key step is to cut petal shapes, curve them to add roundness, and assemble them—this layering of petals gives the tulips their 3D appearance.

After that, just attach the tulips to a backing sheet, and it’s complete.

Express your originality by deciding which colors of tulips to use and where to place them.

Poppy

Poppies, which bloom from spring to summer, are also known as hinageshi or gubijinsō, and they produce colorful, round, and charming flowers.

This craft aims to create poppies that feel like the joy of spring, making them look three-dimensional as if they’re popping out from the backing paper.

You cut origami into petal shapes and assemble them into a flower, layering the pieces after making slits to give the flower a three-dimensional form.

Once the petal outline is done, place yellow in the center, and finally combine it so it looks like it’s blooming from the stem and leaf pieces attached to the backing paper, and you’re finished.

windmill

In April, when the temperatures become pleasant, many facilities probably enjoy taking walks or basking in the sun on nice days.

How about making a pinwheel out of origami—an item that’s soothing just to look at and helps spark conversation? It’s very easy to make, and all you need are origami paper, a straw, and a push pin.

Using traditional Japanese patterns, like chiyogami, would make it look especially cute.

It could even be fun to attach one to a wheelchair.

four-leaf clover

A four-leaf clover is like a symbol of happiness, and it’s exciting when you find one, isn’t it? How about making your own four-leaf clover? Using a coffee filter and some paint, you can create a cute design, and it’s fun to watch the paint slowly seep in and form a gradient.

Leave a small part of the coffee filter uncut so the center of the clover stays connected, then cut the leaf sections into rounded shapes.

Hold the connected center and dip it into water tinted with diluted paint.

Let it dry as is, and when you open it up—your clover is complete! If you vary the intensity of the colors and make a bunch of them, it will create an even more spring-like atmosphere.

Three-dimensional dandelion decoration

Three-dimensional dandelion decoration

Here’s how to make a three-dimensional dandelion decoration using origami.

Fold the origami paper to form the flower, then use scissors to snip fine cuts so it turns into delicate petals.

Prepare four opened pieces and glue them together to create a 3D dandelion bloom.

Attach it, along with dandelion leaves, to a base folded from origami paper.

You can hang it as a wall decoration, or since it’s three-dimensional, it also looks lovely displayed on a table.

Instead of using a single color, adding a color gradient makes it especially beautiful.

lily of the valley

[Craft Idea] Lily of the Valley (April–May, spring) (Wall decorations, senior recreation, occupational therapy OT, day service) (Three-dimensional flower craft) (Easy craft, origami DIY, creative)
lily of the valley

Lily of the valley blooms around April to May and is strongly associated with heralding the arrival of spring.

In this project, we’ll recreate this quintessential spring flower with origami, making the bell-shaped blossoms in three dimensions.

First, cut white origami paper into a flat shape like spread petals, then attach it to a long, rolled stem piece.

From there, overlap and adjust each petal to form the bell shape.

Once the flower components are complete, attach them to a backing sheet decorated with leaves and other parts to finish.

Aim for a design where the flowers appear to pop out.
