Cheer calls performed during the sports day’s cheer battles and events to support the whole team and your teammates.

In this article, we’ve gathered recommended cheer calls for sports day.

We’ll introduce classic calls where everyone shouts together at once, as well as call-and-response chants between the cheer squad and teammates.

Incorporate them into your sports day cheering and give your teammates your full support!

Call-and-response type (1–10)

“Will everyone bring home the championship?” “You bet!”

“Will everyone bring home the championship?” “You bet!”

Inspired by the call-and-response between Tamori and the audience on the hugely popular variety show “Morita Kazuyoshi Hour: Waratte Iitomo!”, which Tamori hosted for many years.

The line “Will you bring home the championship?” can be adapted to “Will you all join forces and do your best?” or “Will you take first place in the next relay?”, and so on—highly recommended.

If everyone shouts a big, loud “Iitomo!” together, it’s sure to fire you up with a “Let’s do this!” spirit!

“Let’s work together!” “Let’s do our best!”

"Let's work together!" "Let's do our best!"

This call-and-response is easy even for lower elementary school children, as well as kids in daycare and kindergarten.

The words are simple and there’s no complex rhythm, so it’s an easy way to cheer.

If you want to convey spirit and energy, it’s best to say it briskly and fast overall.

The energy of the person doing the first half of the call is important, but for this chant we especially recommend saying the second-half “We can do it!” as energetically as possible.

By having everyone say it together in loud, lively voices, it boosts not only individuals, but the morale and fighting spirit of the entire team!

Aim for it; Glory; Seize it; Championship

Aim for it; Glory; Seize it; Championship

Call-and-response with straightforward, powerful phrases creates an impact that overwhelms the opponent while boosting your team’s morale.

It’s not just the cheer squad—having the whole team shout together builds greater unity and energy, so I highly recommend it.

Besides words like “glory” and “victory,” lining up rhyming words can add even more drive and rhythm to the cheer.

These phrases are great not only for sports days but also for team huddles in group sports.

「We can」「do it!」「We can」「win!」

「We can」「do it!」「We can」「win!」

In 1942 America, the phrase “We can do it!”, created as a slogan to boost workers’ morale, also serves to inspire teams as a cheer at sports events.

Moreover, the stance of “We can win!”, which shows unwavering belief in our victory, can put pressure on the opposing team.

The fact that these are short English phrases that are easy for both our team and the opponents to understand makes them especially convenient for cheer squads.

As a call-and-response, they’re positive phrases that deepen team unity.

“Championship” / “Got it!”

"Championship" / "Got it!"

Have fun with a call-and-response! Here’s an idea using “Champions!” and “Gotta catch ’em all!” Many of you have probably heard the phrase “Gotta catch ’em all!” before—it’s the signature line used by the protagonist of the hugely popular Pokémon series in anime, films, and games.

This idea cleverly adapts that cool catchphrase for use at sports days and school athletic festivals.

When the cheer squad shouts “Champions!” the students in the team should respond with “Gotta catch ’em all!”

Call-and-response type (11–20)

“Let’s go!” “Yup!” “We’re gonna win!” “Yup!”

"Let's go!" "Yup!" "We’re gonna win!" "Yup!"

Loco Solare, the curling team from Hokkaido that won bronze at the Pyeongchang Olympics and silver at the Beijing Olympics.

The word that became a hot topic in their conversations was the response “Sodane,” right? How about using this word as a cheering call.

In addition to “Let’s go!” and “We’re going to win!”, you could use it for various chants like “We’re taking first place!” and “We’re going to be champions!”—and have everyone answer with a strong, determined “Sodane!” packed with the feeling of “We’ll do it!” Not only does it fire you up, but the warm, gentle word also helps ease the tension just the right amount.

Yoiyasa yoiyasa yoiyasano-sa! / That’s it! / Class ◯, champions—yoiyasano-sa! / That’s it!

Yoiyasa yoiyasa yoiyasano-sa! / That's it! / Class ◯, champions—yoiyasano-sa! / That's it!

Using the word “yoiyasa,” this call-and-response is done with a rhythmic flow.

After one full sequence of “yoiyasa yoiyasa yoiyasa no sa” followed by “sore,” you voice your desire to win or take first place in a competition, and end the sentence with “yoiyasa.” Then, as a reply to that sentiment, respond with “sore.” Since a certain level of snappy tempo is needed, pay attention to things like the number of syllables in the words you use.

If you keep time with a drum or similar, you can do the call-and-response with a good rhythm!
