Stand out with sports day cheer calls! Ideas for chants that fire up the crowd

At sports days and athletic festivals, nothing boosts team morale like a rousing cheer! Unified chants and clapping are a vital force that powerfully push the athletes forward.

But when it comes time to come up with cheers, many people find themselves wondering, “What words work best?” or “How can we really hype everyone up?” In this article, we’ll share a wide range of phrase ideas perfect for sports day cheers.

From classic calls to original, creative chants, we’ve gathered plenty—so bring your voices together as a team and create an unforgettable day!

Classics (1–10)

First, let’s introduce some classic cheers that everyone can shout together in unison! Besides sports days, there are lots of cheers you often hear in clubs and on TV, too.

The phrases are mostly simple, which makes them easy to use during events and also easy for younger kids—like lower elementary, kindergarten, or preschoolers—to shout.

Where there are blanks in the words, fill in your team name or team color.

All right, let’s go with some high-energy cheers!

We’ll win, we’ll win—Class O will win! Champions, champions—Class O are the champions!NEW!

We’ll win, we’ll win—Class O will win! Champions, champions—Class O are the champions!NEW!

By repeating the same words, this chant conveys a strong will and a blazing fighting spirit—“We’re absolutely going to win!” You can feel their total commitment to aiming for nothing less than the championship.

It’s perfect for uniting everyone in the class, and its versatility makes it usable in any class where students are aiming for victory.

If you’re having trouble deciding, why not try this chant? Let’s work together toward the simple goal of winning the championship and create unforgettable memories with everyone in the class!

Go, go, Team ○!

This cheer, “Ikkee, Ikeike [X-gumi]!” often appears in scenes of cheering in sports manga, starting with baseball manga.

A variation, “Ikkee, Ikkee [X-gumi]!”, is also a classic go-to phrase.

You can slot in the competing student’s class or name, or your own team’s name in place of [X-gumi], so it’s more versatile than you might think.

It also pairs perfectly with popular cheer songs like Linda Yamamoto’s hit ‘Neraiuchi.’ Give it a try for inspiration!

So slow—push, push, Class O!

The cheer “Ossee! Ose-ose, Class ◯!” is a very positive chant used with the sense of “Build momentum and push the opponent down!” You can, of course, swap “Class ◯” for the name of the individual competing.

To add even more punch to the cheer, we recommend splitting into boys’ and girls’ groups and chanting in alternation.

Rather than everyone shouting all at once, it makes for a more dynamic, impactful cheer.

Mixing it with a similar chant like “Ikkee—ike-ike!” should hype things up even more!

Hooray, hooray, Class ◯! Go, go, Class ◯! Go, go, Class ◯!

Hooray, hooray, Class ◯! Go, go, Class ◯! Go, go, Class ◯!

The phrase “Furei! Furei!” that always shows up in cheering battles actually comes from the English word “hurrah,” which is, of course, pronounced “furei” in Japanese.

Originally, it meant something like “banzai” (a cheer of joy).

It seems that using “furei” twice in succession for cheering started in the Taisho era.

“Furei! Furei! [Team/Class Name]! Furei! Furei! [Team/Class Name]! Furei! Furei! [Team/Class Name]!” is a classic cheer that gets the whole team or class excited.

It’s also an easy phrase to shout loudly, so be sure to cheer your heart out in the pep rally!

Go, go, Class ◯!

The word “Ganbare” is straightforward and truly uplifting.

The classic “Ganbare, ganbare, Class ◯!” is undeniably the go-to phrase you just can’t leave out in a cheer battle.

It’s really handy both as one of the cheers when building your routine and as an encouragement to teammates during events.

If instruments are allowed, I’d love to pound a big drum as we cheer.

If instruments aren’t allowed, I think everyone clapping in unison with a tight rhythm would look awesome!

Win, win, Team ◯!

When you shout the cheer “Win, win, Class ◯!”, try saying it in a voice loud enough not to be drowned out by the instruments you’re using! Feel free to arrange it into phrases like “Wiiin—win, win, Class ◯!” or “Wiiin—wiiin—Class ◯!” so it’s easier to project as loudly as possible.

Mixing in “Don’t lose, don’t lose, Class ◯” could work well too! If you can’t use instruments for cheering, plastic bottles are a great option.

Put some marbles inside and you’ll get a surprisingly loud sound, and adding colored ribbons makes them look festive.

Be sure to try them together with this cheer!

We won the championship—won! We wooo-oon, we won the championship!

We won the championship—won! We wooo-oon, we won the championship!

Let’s fire up the team with a super confident chant that practically says, “All we can see is victory!” If you do it while your team is in the lead, it’ll carry you straight to the championship.

On the other hand, if things aren’t going well, it turns into a cheer that says, “Don’t give up—keep pushing!” You can also swap out “championship” for the event name, like relay or tug-of-war.

When you feel your confidence wavering, try using this chant to snap back into gear.
