August Craft Ideas for 5-Year-Olds

August, when the real heat arrives, is the perfect season for pools and water play.

However, it’s not possible to enjoy pools or water play every day, and some of you may be looking for creative indoor activities.

In this article, we’ll introduce August craft ideas that are perfect for five-year-olds!

We’ve gathered ideas kids will love, including ones for wall displays, toys they can take home and play with, and crafts useful for pretend summer festivals.

Please use them as a reference.

Because the children’s creations are treated as works of art, we use the term “seisaku” (制作, creations) in the text.

Origami Fish

[Origami] How to Make a Fish (Part 1): A Basic Fish You Can Customize
Origami Fish

Let’s make fish with origami! There are many ways to fold an origami fish.

You can use a square sheet as it is, or fold it after cutting it in half.

Even if you fold the same fish shape, just changing the color of the paper can make it feel like there are many different kinds of fish.

You can also create a different kind of fish simply by adding patterns after folding.

If children make lots of them and decorate a wall in the room, you can enjoy a cool atmosphere as if you were in the ocean or an aquarium.

Be sure to make plenty!

Origami Goldfish & Construction Paper Poi

Here’s a crafting idea for making a goldfish scooping set using origami paper and construction paper.

Wrap a crumpled tissue with origami paper, secure it with a pipe cleaner, shape the tail, then stick on a round sticker and draw the eye—your goldfish is done, and it’s easy! The scooper (poi) can be made simply by combining a round-cut piece of construction paper with a pair of chopsticks, so it could also be used as a summer recreation activity.

You can make it even more vibrant by using your favorite colors of origami paper, and thanks to its cute look, it also works great as a room decoration.

Give it a try!

Sunflowers drawn with fingertips

Sensory Play: Finger-Painted Sunflowers 🌻 | A Craft Idea for Babies (Suitable from 0 Years Old)
Sunflowers drawn with fingertips

Here’s a sunflower art idea that even 0-year-olds can enjoy using their fingertips! Place blobs of paint on white drawing paper in the shape of a sunflower and add a small amount of water.

Next, put the paper inside a storage bag.

By spreading the paint from the outside of the bag, children can enjoy a sensory play experience without getting their hands dirty! They’ll love the squishy feel and watching the colors blend, making it easy to introduce even in infant classes.

To finish, take the paper out of the bag, let it dry, and add a frame made from black construction paper.

With the frame, each child’s unique creation becomes a delightful piece of art.

Paper cup sunflower

Here’s an idea for making a three-dimensional sunflower using a common material: a paper cup.

Cut off the rim of the paper cup, then wrap double-sided tape around the bottom part.

Use the double-sided tape as a guide to cut the cup into 16 equal sections.

Peel off the tape and attach each strip by rolling it inward one by one.

Add color with pens or crayons, and the sunflower’s blossom is complete! For the finishing touch, make the stem and leaves out of origami paper to create an even more realistic summer scene.

Some steps can be tricky for children to do alone, so it’s best to enjoy making it together with a teacher or guardian.

In conclusion

How did you like the August craft ideas? Since it’s summer, we’ve gathered not only cool, refreshing ideas but also techniques and motifs that 5-year-olds can enjoy.
