August Craft Ideas for 5-Year-Olds
August, when the real heat arrives, is the perfect season for pools and water play.
However, it’s not possible to enjoy pools or water play every day, and some of you may be looking for creative indoor activities.
In this article, we’ll introduce August craft ideas that are perfect for five-year-olds!
We’ve gathered ideas kids will love, including ones for wall displays, toys they can take home and play with, and crafts useful for pretend summer festivals.
Please use them as a reference.
Because the children’s creations are treated as works of art, we use the term “seisaku” (制作, creations) in the text.

[For 5-year-olds] August craft ideas (1–10)
sunflower

Making sunflowers like the summer sun sounds fun.
First, draw a circle on a large sheet of paper, then extend the petals from it.
If you tear yellow origami paper and paste it on, the petals will have a soft, fluffy texture.
For the center with the seeds, crumple small pieces of brown origami paper and glue them on.
Make the leaves with green origami paper.
Tearing the paper and gluing it together with the children will make for a really enjoyable time.
Once the sunflowers are finished and hung on the wall, the whole room will feel brighter.
shaved ice

How about making shaved ice, a summer staple? If you make it together with your child, it will become a fun memory.
Create the bowl and ice parts with construction paper, and use tissue paper, raffia tape, or tissues to represent the ice.
Color the syrup with paints or crayons to complete a colorful shaved ice.
Using stamps makes it enjoyable even for small children.
The finished piece is perfect as a wall decoration for your room, too.
It’s a great way to feel cool during the hot summer.
Try making a one-of-a-kind shaved ice in your child’s favorite colors and shapes.
turtle

This is a cute turtle wall decoration made with paper plates and raffia tape.
First, color the paper plate freely with crayons.
Next, make diagonal cuts with scissors and weave in the raffia tape.
It’s fun to see a lattice pattern form, just like a turtle shell.
For the turtle’s head and limbs, attach double-sided tape to pieces of construction paper you’ve cut out and stick them onto the paper plate.
Draw the eyes with a crayon, add double-sided tape to the back, and it’s done.
Surrounded by turtles that look like they’re swimming leisurely through the sea, you’ll really feel the summer vibe.
[5-year-olds] August Craft Ideas (11–20)
A painting of hide-and-seek gliding between the waves

First, use a sponge dauber to stamp white paint onto blue construction paper.
Next, dab on more paint with your fingertips.
Fold the top edge slightly, cut the bottom edge in a wavy line with scissors, and paste it onto another sheet of blue construction paper to make the base.
Then, prepare pieces of colored paper cut into fish shapes and seaweed shapes.
Stick the fish and seaweed onto the base however you like, and you’re done.
When you move the waves back and forth, the fish appear and hide.
Enjoy a cute game of hide-and-seek under the sea!
wind chime

How about making a cute, refreshing-looking wind chime? You’ll need an empty jelly cup, washi tape, jewel stickers, a bell, twine, and an awl.
First, decorate the cup with washi tape.
Fill the open spaces with jewel stickers to finish the top part of the wind chime.
Next, please have the teacher/caregiver make two holes in the cup.
Tying the bell and the strip of paper (tanzaku) to the twine is great fine-motor practice for five-year-olds.
Let the children draw their favorite pictures on the tanzaku to enjoy customizing their wind chimes.
Takoyaki

Here’s another hugely popular summer festival stall series: takoyaki.
First, prepare a sheet of colored construction paper to make the takoyaki boat.
Cut slits on both sides, fold them inward, and use double-sided tape to form a boat shape.
Next, crumple tissue paper and wrap it with origami paper in a color close to takoyaki.
Paint it with brown paint to look like sauce.
Finely cut green and brown construction paper to mimic aonori seaweed and bonito flakes, and sprinkle them on top.
Your delicious-looking takoyaki is complete.
Make lots and use them for a pretend summer festival—it’s sure to be a hit!
Watermelon fan

This is an accordion-fold fan made of origami that’s fun to open and close.
Make it with summer motifs like watermelon, sunflowers, or fireworks to boost the summer mood.
For example, for a watermelon, glue white and red origami onto green origami, draw black seeds on the red part, and accordion-fold it.
Make three of these, glue or tape them together, and attach chopsticks to the grooves at both ends to finish.
It folds up like a hand fan, making it convenient to carry around!
