[For Seniors] Easy Crafts Recommended for August

August often brings a prolonged heat wave, so many older adults prefer to spend time in cool indoor spaces.

A great indoor activity we recommend is crafts.

If you’re unsure what to make, crafts themed around August events and seasonal traditions are a good choice.

We’ve gathered plenty of summer craft ideas—like uchiwa fans, paper lanterns, and sunflowers.

For older adults, engaging with August-themed items can help them feel the season more closely.

Use this article as a guide for planning your August craft projects.

[For Seniors] Easy Craft Ideas Recommended for August (11–20)

Melon wall decoration

One of the fruits that are in season in August is melon.

So how about making a melon as an August craft? First, prepare white copy paper and green construction paper, and crumple them into a ball using hand strength.

Once the construction paper is crumpled, open it up, apply glue to the back, and stick it over the copy paper as a cover.

Now you’ve made the base of the melon.

Next, paste thin strips of white paper on top to resemble the melon’s pattern, and attach a stem at the end to finish.

Some older adults may find it difficult to apply hand strength as they wish.

With this activity, they can enjoy it like a game while also working on functional improvement.

Wind chimes are a uniquely Japanese symbol of summer, aren’t they? Just gazing at them makes you feel the season’s arrival.

How about making your own wind chime by hand? This time, I’ll introduce a very simple handmade wind chime you can create.

First, inflate a balloon and wrap thread around it.

Then harden it with glue and let it dry.

Add decorations as you like, and in no time it’s finished.

You’ll have a one-of-a-kind wind chime that exists nowhere else in the world! Hang it by the window, and you’ll feel the essence of summer.

dolphin

We’d like to introduce an origami piece that looks like a dolphin leaping and swimming through the sea.

Start by making crease lines on the paper, then continue folding step by step.

As you go, it gradually takes on the shape of a dolphin, so older adults can enjoy making it as well.

The dolphin’s mouth and tail fin are also made from a single sheet of paper.

Because of that, there are some steps with finer, more detailed folds.

If the older adult is skilled at origami, they’ll likely enjoy the process.

Once finished, you can arrange it in different ways, such as turning it into a wreath or attaching it to a calendar.

Watermelon fan

Here’s how to make a watermelon fan using popsicle sticks.

Gather popsicle sticks, wire, colored construction paper, and glue.

Prepare five popsicle sticks and drill a hole at the bottom of each stick.

Thread the wire through the holes to bind them together.

Cut the construction paper into a fan-shaped watermelon slice, and use colored paper to create the rind and seeds to form the watermelon design.

Open and close the fan as you assemble it so the shape and movement work smoothly, then finish it up.

Add your name or decorations to create your own original fan.

happi (traditional Japanese festival coat)

happi (traditional Japanese festival coat)

In August, many facilities probably hold summer festivals, don’t they? Here’s an origami happi coat that’s perfect for indoor summer festival decorations and August wall displays.

You’ll fold it using a single sheet of origami paper.

Some steps are a bit complex, but the finished result looks just like a real happi.

Please try folding it with support from those around you, tailored to the needs of older adults.

On the back of the finished happi, write the character for “festival” (祭) with a black pen, or write it on white paper and paste it on.

That will make it look even more authentic.

These cute, cool-looking translucent plastic cup crafts are perfect for summer and are an easy idea for seniors to try.

By placing two layers of blue cellophane or transparent origami inside a clear plastic cup, you can create a water-like transparent effect.

Cut masking tape—first stuck onto baking paper—into shapes like fish or jellyfish, and stick them on the inside of a separate cup.

Finally, stack the cups, and you’ll have a clever mechanism that makes the creatures inside look like they’re moving.

It engages fine motor skills while letting you enjoy colors and shapes, stimulating creativity and offering an easy way to feel the season.

It’s also a big plus that it can be done indoors without strain, even on hot days.

Sunflower made by rolling

Sunflower made by rolling

Sunflowers burst into large, vibrant blooms in summer.

Let’s make cheerful sunflowers by rolling strips of paper! Prepare long, thin strips of brown construction paper for the center, yellow for the petals, and green for the calyx of the flower.

For the petal and calyx strips, pre-cut slits to create petal shapes and similar details.

Then, starting from the center, roll the paper while securing it with glue as you go.

After rolling, open out the slit sections for the petals and calyx to finish! It might be best for staff to handle the detailed work like cutting the paper, and have older adults do the rolling.
