white

Pandas are known for their distinctive black-and-white fur, and many people probably imagine that the areas around their eyes, their limbs, and their ears are black. When it comes to the tail, it’s often assumed to be black as well, but it’s actually white. It’s said that the panda’s black-and-white pattern helps protect them from predators, and that the black areas may also serve to retain warmth.

Elephant

The animals among the choices each have a certain body part that is long—did you figure it out? A giraffe has a long neck, and a rabbit has long ears. So the animal with a long nose is the elephant. An elephant’s trunk isn’t just its nose; it’s also an elongated upper lip, so it serves many purposes, like drinking water and communicating with others!

Capybara

Capybaras don’t handle cold well, so during the chilly winter season they sometimes soak in hot springs. Some of you may have seen this on TV. While they’re in the water they stay warm, but you might worry they’ll get chilled after getting out. However, it’s said that capybaras can maintain their body temperature for more than 30 minutes after a bath!

The stripes of a zebra are said to protect it from predators and help repel insects. Interestingly, the stripes are only in the fur—the skin underneath is reportedly dark. Thanks to their striped coats, zebras are able to live more safely.

Camels store the nutrients they need to survive in the desert as fat in their humps. When they go days in the desert without being able to eat, they gradually use the fat in their humps to get nourishment. As they use up more and more of these nutrients, their humps are said to gradually shrink.

Moo

Giraffes are popular at zoos, but have you ever heard them vocalize? I think most people haven’t. Their call is said to sound like “mooo,” similar to a cow. The reason you don’t hear them much is that giraffes typically vocalize when there’s danger or when they’re giving birth. Even zookeepers say they rarely hear it!

penguin

Penguins cannot fly because their bodies are heavy and their wings are small. However, in water they can swim as if they were flying. Just like birds in the sky, they flap their wings underwater and can swim very fast!
