Love at first sight with a bass girl! The female bassist of a popular band

There are actually a lot of women who play bass in rock bands—like TOMOMI (SCANDAL), 345 (Ling tosite sigure), Hiromi Hirohiro (tricot), F Chopper KOGA (Gacharic Spin), junko (Uchikubi Gokumon Doukoukai), and many more! So in this article, we’re going to introduce a whole lineup of female bassists active on the Japanese music scene.

If you’re thinking about starting bass, this might be your chance to find someone to look up to.

Let’s dive right in!

Love at first sight with bass girls! Female bassists from popular bands (ages 21–30)

Asahi Kanako, who plays bass for the rock band Backdrop Cinderella.

Many members of this band have quirky names, and the group originally formed after a coincidence in 2006: the band with the guitarist and bassist and the band with the vocalist and drummer both went on hiatus at the same time, leading to the creation of a new band.

Thanks to that stroke of chance, we’re really lucky to be able to enjoy their music.

Kanako, who steadfastly supports this eccentric band from the ground up, is said to have once worked as a hostess in Ginza.

She’s mysterious—and utterly fascinating.

Welcome to nightShibuya Masako (MAMADRIVE)

Masako Shibuya is a female bassist based in Kobe who’s actively performing.

She handles both bass and vocals for MAMADRIVE.

Formed in 2010, MAMADRIVE is characterized by expressions that walk a fine line as love transforms into madness, with themes built around contrasts like “front and back” and “light and darkness.” Their album Urahara features songs that explore the bliss and the end of love.

The raw, erotic-grotesque lyrics of their movie theme song also drew attention.

Centered around Masako Shibuya, MAMADRIVE occupies a unique place in Japan’s indie music scene.

Their music, which probes deep and complex emotions—love, friendship, and the madness lurking within the human psyche—leaves a powerful impression!

GliderIshiwata Makiko (the peggies)

Born in 1995, Makiko Ishiwata is the bassist of the peggies.

She began playing bass for a trivial reason, but she’s increasingly come to seem like someone who was born to be a bassist.

The way she plays a Fender bass slung low, along with her stylish hair, is wonderful.

Although the peggies ceased activities at the end of September 2022, I’m looking forward to seeing what she does next as a bassist.

DreamerFurukawa Miki (SUPERCAR)

Former bassist and vocalist of SUPERCAR.

Currently active with LAMA and as a solo artist.

Known for a floaty, transparent singing voice, they also leverage their distinctive tone for commercial narration and voice acting.

Their unique fashion and singular worldview are also part of their appeal.

Cherry BombYamauchi Aina (Silent Siren)

Commonly known as “Saisai,” the group was formed in 2010, primarily by reader models active in fashion magazines.

As a girls’ band, they achieved a live performance at the Nippon Budokan just 2 years and 2 months after their debut—the fastest in history.

The bassist, Aina Yamauchi, was a model for the magazine mina.

Tomorrow as wellMatsuoka Aya (SHISHAMO)

SHISHAMO was formed in 2010 by three high school girls in Kawasaki, Kanagawa Prefecture.

Bassist Aya Matsuoka joined in 2014, after being invited while working a backstage part-time job at a music festival, replacing the previous bassist who left the band.

abyssrin -Lin-

Abyss / Lin with contrabassist Shoji Uno and cellist Shiorin
abyssrin -Lin-

Rin-Lin originally performed as the frontman of COMezik, but began full-fledged solo work in 2018.

Since then, she has continued to take her music to the world, including overseas tours and recording.

The way she wields the bass like a guitar and layers sounds herself is highly artistic, giving a sense of transcending gender.

Music played on the bass rather than the guitar delivers solid low-end, with a compelling ebb and flow between stability and instability.

Be sure to experience her unique world.
