Hailing from Yatsushiro City in Kumamoto Prefecture, the songstress who defined an era with her beauty and husky voice is, of course, Aki Yashiro.
After working as a club singer in Ginza, she made her debut in 1971 and had a major breakthrough with “Namida Koi” in 1973.
She left behind many unforgettable songs that touch the heart, including “Funauta” and “Ame no Bojo.” She won the Japan Record Award in 1980, but her appeal wasn’t limited to enka.
In 2012, she released the jazz album “Yoru no Album,” and she also showcased her multifaceted talent as a painter, becoming a permanent member of France’s “Le Salon.” Aki Yashiro sadly passed away in December 2023.

Natsuko Godai, born in Shibuya, Tokyo, is beloved as a “beautiful enka singer” for her elegant kimono style and refined beauty.
After several stage-name changes, she re-debuted under her current name in 1987 with the single “Modorikawa,” which became a major hit, selling about 350,000 copies.
The following year, 1988, she made history in the enka world by winning two top rookie awards, including the Japan Cable Radio Awards.
In 1990, she made her first appearance on the NHK Kohaku Uta Gassen with “Shinobu Ame.” She married Ryotaro Sugi in 1999, and the couple’s dedication to welfare activities is also admirable.
Known for classic enka that tenderly expresses a woman’s heart, she is multi-talented as well, holding photo exhibitions as an avid photographer.

Hailing from Wakayama Prefecture, Fuyumi Sakamoto honed her craft through rigorous training as a direct disciple of composer Kimimasa Inomata, developing solid, proven skill.
She made her debut in 1987 with the single “Abare Daiko,” making a sensational entrance by sweeping the year’s newcomer awards.
She went on to release a string of beloved enka classics such as “Iwaizake” and “Yozakura Oshichi,” and is known as a regular on the NHK Kōhaku Uta Gassen, with over 30 appearances.
She has also ventured beyond genre boundaries—forming a unit with artists like Kiyoshiro Imawano and releasing the J-pop cover album “Omoibito” in 2024—adding to her appeal.
Her expressive power, evidenced by numerous accolades including the Japan Cable Radio Awards and the New Artist Award from the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology’s Art Encouragement Prizes, captivates not only enka fans but anyone seeking a voice that resonates with the heart.
