[2026] Masterpieces of Blues Rock: Recommended Albums You Should Listen to at Least Once

The genre known as blues rock is, literally, a style of rock music with the blues as its foundation.

It’s said to have been started by British musicians who admired the great American bluesmen from the birthplace of the blues, and later bands in America emerged that played blues rock as well.

While the genre itself might not be something most people encounter unless they’re avid music fans, in reality many famous bands and artists—familiar even to casual listeners—have been influenced by the blues and expressed it in their own form of rock.

This time, we’re introducing some essential classics of blues rock! We’ve selected definitive live albums—where the genre truly shines—as well as notable releases from recent years.

[2026] Masterpieces of Blues Rock: Must-Listen Recommended Albums (71–80)

Fly Like an Eagle

Fly Like an EagleSteve Miller Band

The jacket cover design, with hair flying as he furiously shreds the guitar, looks incredibly cool! Today I’m introducing Fly Like an Eagle, one of the signature works by the Steve Miller Band, formed in San Francisco in 1966 by Steve Miller, who had learned guitar from childhood and was already active as a semi-pro musician at a young age.

Known in Japan under the title “Taka no Tsume” (“Eagle’s Talon”), the album was released in 1976 and became a massive hit, selling over 4 million copies worldwide.

Miller, a devoted blues lover with a background backing famed bluesmen like Muddy Waters, crafted on this record a sound that embraces blues, of course, but also space rock, psychedelia, country, and R&B—yet still achieves a remarkable sense of cohesion across the album as a whole.

In addition to the hit singles like the title track, it’s also notable that the set firmly includes rootsier pieces such as Sweet Maree, where the plaintive harmonica really stands out.

EAST-WEST

Walkin’ BluesThe Butterfield Blues Band

If you’re well-versed in rock history, you’ll surely know the famous episode in which a young Bob Dylan—then a highly popular, up-and-coming folk singer—picked up an electric guitar at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival, delivering a performance that sparked major controversy.

The backing band for that performance was the Paul Butterfield Blues Band, whom we’re introducing here.

Centered around Paul Butterfield—son of a lawyer, trained in classical flute, yet enamored with the blues—the group became pioneers of white blues played by white musicians.

Their 1966 landmark album East-West is an ambitious blues-rock masterpiece: the authentic groove of a Black rhythm section, the guitar work of virtuosos Elvin Bishop and Mike Bloomfield, and the emotive blues harp and soulful vocals combine to create remarkable chemistry, even incorporating elements of jazz and Indian music.

Projections

I Can’t Keep From Crying”The Blues Project

Released in November 1966, The Blues Project’s second album, Projections, stands as a brilliant masterpiece in the history of blues rock.

The tracks on this record are imbued with deep emotion, exploring themes of loss and loneliness, and beautifully fusing blues traditions with psychedelic elements.

Al Kooper’s distinctive vocals and the energetic arrangements leave a strong impression, while the band’s overall emotive performance resonates deeply with listeners.

Blending blues, jazz, folk, and soul, the album was closely tied to the counterculture of its time and captivated music fans with its innovative sound.

It’s a highly recommended listen for those seeking heartfelt lyrics and performances, as well as anyone interested in the music of the 1960s.

El jardinero (Temprano amaneció)Pescado Rabioso

Pescado Rabioso’s debut album, Desatormentándonos—by the rock band that Argentina proudly claims as its own—is a classic released in September 1972.

Rooted in blues rock yet infused with psychedelic touches and the power of hard rock, it stands out for its innovative sound.

Luis Alberto Spinetta’s profound lyrics and forward-thinking musical vision captured the hearts of Argentina’s youth at the time.

The album includes a song that portrays society’s absurdities from a gardener’s perspective, its lyrics symbolizing how human effort can be undone by the forces of environment and nature.

It’s a must-listen for anyone who wants to reflect deeply on music and society, and for those eager to experience the essence of South American rock.

Kiedy byłem małym chłopcemBreakout

A classic that left a profound mark on Poland’s blues-rock scene, Blues.

Released in 1971, this album remains beloved by many fans as Breakout’s signature work.

One of the tracks explores life’s values through a dialogue between father and son, resonating deeply with listeners.

Powerful guitar riffs and emotive vocals blend perfectly, creating a gem where the soul of the blues fuses with the energy of rock.

It’s recommended for those who want to reflect on life through music and for anyone seeking lyrics and performances that truly move the heart.
