Let’s try making something while touching soft, fluffy material! Here are some ideas for wool felt coasters.

Wool felt is felt made from sheep’s wool, and it’s a material you can shape as you like by poking it with a needle or other tools.

This time, we’ll make coasters using wool felt.

What you’ll need: 15 grams of wool in your favorite color, a tray, a plastic bag, plastic gloves, stiff tulle, soap, lukewarm water, and a hand towel.

Here’s an idea for making coasters using snack bags printed with characters.

First, cut origami paper into a circle to create a base.

Cut out the design you want from the snack bag and collage it onto the base.

Make a color copy of the base, trim off any unnecessary parts, and stick the design side onto the adhesive side of a laminating sheet.

Place a clear file on top and rub the back with a ruler to transfer it.

Trim off the excess laminating sheet, then soak it in water.

After 30 minutes, rub off the white paper residue with your fingers.

Once it’s dry, it’s finished.

“F-Puzzle” is a felt puzzle toy.

You insert one piece into the holes of another to create various shapes, and with just four pieces you can even make a coaster! First, place one piece in the center and insert a piece into each of the holes at the top and bottom.

Place the remaining two pieces on the left and right, then insert the center piece into the holes of the left and right pieces in the opposite direction.

It’s simple, and that completes your puzzle coaster! It’s great for practicing fine motor skills, so try making it with your child.

You can purchase F-Puzzle from our online shop.

Diatomaceous earth coaster

Would you like to try making diatomaceous earth coasters with excellent absorbency? It might seem difficult, but if you buy a dedicated kit, it’s actually easy to make! All you do is mix water with the powder included in the kit, pour it into a mold, and let it set—safe enough for children to handle.

If you want to add color to your coaster, put a few drops of ink in when you mix the powder.

It takes about two days to cure, so if you’re making it as a summer vacation project, be sure to allow plenty of time.

Coasters made from milk cartons

I tried making an easy craft with a milk carton: a coaster! Perfect for a summer vacation project, too.
Coasters made from milk cartons

Perfect for a summer vacation craft! Here’s an idea for making coasters from a milk carton.

First, cut the carton open with scissors so it lies flat, and remove the bottom and the spout.

Then separate the sides into four pieces and cut them into squares.

These will be the coaster bases, so decorate them however you like.

You can glue on your favorite origami paper, or use masking tape to add patterns.

If you peel off the transparent film from the milk carton, you can also paint them with watercolors or acrylics.

Try making them in any shapes you like!

A coaster like glass

You can use resin to make coasters that look like glass.

It’s a very refreshing idea, so how about trying it as a summer vacation craft? First, attach a sheet of paper with your design printed on it to the adhesive side of a laminating sheet.

Soak it in water to soften it and peel off the unwanted paper, then wipe off the moisture and cut it into a circle.

Spread a thin layer of resin in a round silicone mold, place the cut laminating sheet on top, and then pour more resin over it.

Once it cures, it’s done.

When using resin, make sure to ventilate the area, and if you use a UV light for curing, be careful not to look at it directly.

Resin liquid is mainly sold online, but you can also find it at 100-yen shops.

In conclusion

The fun of crafts isn’t just when you finish—it’s also packed into the time you spend making them.

Handmade coasters are perfect not only for kids’ summer homework but also as an everyday crafting activity.

You can start easily with materials you have on hand, so cherish your child’s “I want to make it!” spirit and encourage them to take on creating wonderful pieces!
