Many people want to draw the zodiac animal, the Horse, but aren’t sure how.

So here’s a method for drawing a horse illustration using just three ovals.

The ovals represent the head, the front-body/foreleg area, and the hind-leg area.

Connect the ovals with lines to form the horse’s shape, paying attention to their sizes and positions.

Once you get the placement of the ovals down, you can draw horses in various poses—standing still, running, or looking back.

Feel free to arrange and stylize your horse illustration as you like, and turn it into a lovely New Year’s card.

Brush-painted horses are so full of energy and really beautiful, aren’t they? This time, I’ll show you an easy way to draw a horse that even beginners can copy.

It’s a perfect design for New Year’s cards in the Year of the Horse.

まず、カタカナの「ハ」を想像し、それを使って首と顔を描きましょう。

Then add some volume to the cheeks, and use elongated ovals to represent the torso for the front legs and the hindquarters.

Connect the ovals with curves, then draw the legs.

Instead of drawing the legs from the base, it’s best to divide them into parts and start from the endpoints.

Use a different color for the mane, hooves, and tail.

New Year’s greeting card made using origami

Here’s an idea for making New Year’s cards with origami decorations! First, let’s make Mount Fuji.

Turn the origami paper over so the back side is up, place a corner toward you, and fold it into a triangle twice to make crease lines.

Fold the top corner down to the center, then fold the tip up to the edge, and fold the tip back down just a little.

Flip it over, then fold the top left and right edges in to meet the center line.

Fold the bottom corner up to just shy of the center line, and Mount Fuji is done.

Next, the sun.

With the paper’s back side up, fold it into a triangle twice, open it out, and fold it using the “cushion” (zabuton) base.

Fold each of the four corners in by about 2 cm, and it’s finished.

Lastly, the clouds.

With a corner facing you, fold the paper in half.

Using the “kite” base so that an edge is facing you, fold it, keeping the narrow end toward you.

Flip it over, fold the bottom edge up to about 1 cm from the bottom, then fold only the right corner down to align with the bottom edge.

Finally, fold the remaining upper-right corner so it lines up with the diagonal crease, and you’re done! The steps are simple, so give it a try!

In conclusion

New Year’s cards made together with your children add a warm touch to your season’s greetings.

Using familiar materials like stamps, stickers, and origami paper makes it fun and engaging for kids.

Even with the same techniques, changing the colors and layout will result in a card that reflects each child’s unique personality.

The time you spend crafting handmade New Year’s cards as a family will also become a priceless memory.
