[Classic] Masterpieces of Contemporary Music
When you hear the term “contemporary music,” what kind of pieces come to mind?
Chances are, many people don’t have a clear image.
To put it simply, contemporary music is the modern version of classical music, with a broader musical range than traditional classical.
Since it’s an abstract category, thinking of it as modern classical is perfectly fine.
This time, I’ve picked out some masterpieces of contemporary music.

- Masterpieces of Minimal Music | Including Lesser-Known Works
[Standard] Masterpieces of Contemporary Music (11–20)
WTC 9/11Steve Reich

Contemporary music includes a derivative genre called minimal music.
Minimal music is a genre that keeps musical motion to a minimum and relies on frequent repetition of patterns.
Steve Reich is known as a representative composer of minimal music.
His piece “WTC 9/11” is regarded as one of his signature works, and its distinctive structure—evoking the mechanical sounds of airplanes—leaves a strong impression.
Little Match Girl PassionDavid Lang

David Lang, a composer from New York with worldwide recognition.
After earning his bachelor’s degree from Stanford University, he studied music under composer Martin Jenni at the University of Iowa and went on to receive a doctorate in music from Yale University—truly a musical elite.
His Little Match Girl Passion is perhaps his most renowned contemporary work.
Inspired by The Little Match Girl, it has been highly acclaimed as a modern vocal composition and was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Music.
Stabat MaterJames MacMillan

James MacMillan is a composer from Scotland.
While he primarily excels in classical works, he has also released many contemporary pieces, and many of those compositions carry political messages.
A standout work of his that I’d recommend is Stabat Mater.
Since it doesn’t rely heavily on dissonance and the like, I think it’s best enjoyed not as full-on contemporary music, but rather as an extension of the classical tradition.
Lost HighwayOlga Neuwirth

Composer Olga Neuwirth is from Austria.
A graduate of the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna, she specialized in dramatic fields and, while still a student, presented a thesis on the music for the film “L’amour à mort.” Since beginning her career as a composer, she has released several operas.
Among them, the most famous is “L’amour à mort.” Originally a film by David Lynch, it was staged in 2003 and attracted considerable attention.
Its striking use of dissonance creates melodies that evoke a sense of fear.
HamletBrett Dean

Brett Dean is an Australian composer who is also highly regarded as a violinist.
He studied under musicians such as Elizabeth Morgan and John Curro at the Queensland Conservatorium, graduating at the top of his class in 1982.
Among his works, a well-known staple is ‘Duet for Cello and Orchestra.’ Compared to much contemporary music, it features more harmony, making it accessible even to listeners who are not accustomed to the genre.
In conclusion
Contemporary music stems from the classical tradition, but compared to classical works, it often emphasizes silence and deliberately incorporates dissonance, giving me the impression that its expressive range is broader than that of classical music.
At Rug Music, in addition to contemporary music, we also feature genres like contemporary jazz.
