[Piano × Dark Pieces] Classic Masterpieces to Drown in Sorrow (21–30)
Songs Without Words, Book 4, Op. 53, No. 4: “Sorrow of the Heart”Felix Mendelssohn

From the piano collection Songs Without Words, whose delicate, introspective melodies touch the heart, this piece stands out for the serene beauty of its Adagio.
Its gently flowing line carries deep sorrow and melancholy; published in 1841, the work remains calm while containing powerful emotional expression.
As the right hand sings a graceful melody, the left hand supports it softly, like a heartbeat.
Suited to a composed, reflective performance, it is recommended for those who want to fully savor the allure of Romantic music and value nuanced expression.
Despite its simple structure, it offers rich musicality.
Songs Without Words, Book I, Op. 19 No. 2 “Regret”Felix Mendelssohn

The A minor piece included in Book I of Lieder ohne Worte is a work of poignant beauty.
Unfolding at a gentle Andante tempo, its tender, sorrow-tinged melody and simple yet effective accompaniment convey profound emotion.
Published in London in 1832, this piece succeeds in communicating feeling through music alone, without words, distilling the allure of the Romantic piano repertoire.
It is a recommended listen for moments of melancholy, when you simply wish to sit quietly and hear.
[Piano × Dark Pieces] Classic Masterworks That Let You Bask in Sorrow (31–40)
Prelude in C minor, Op. 28 No. 20Frederic Chopin

Known as a piano piece by Frédéric Chopin that is easy to play, this work leaves a strong impression with its weighty, solemn atmosphere despite its short duration.
Its characteristic sound features repeated low-register chords that evoke a funeral march.
The piece unfolds at a relaxed tempo, and the contrast between forte and piano expresses inner emotions.
While approachable for beginner pianists, its nuanced emotional expression makes it popular among advanced players as well.
If you’re interested in classical music, why not give it a try?
Old Clock Tower, Op. 48-2Heino Kaski

Heino Kaski, a great composer who represents Finland.
Although World War I prevented him from achieving major success, he produced several masterpieces.
This time, I’d like to recommend Old Clock Tower, Op.
48-2, from among them.
It features a tragic melody; while it’s a dark piece, it also conveys a glittering atmosphere.
In the middle section, the interplay of major and minor keys vividly expresses shifting emotions, so be sure to listen closely to that part.
Waltz No. 10Frederic Chopin

Waltz No.
10 in B minor, Op.
69 No.
2 by Frédéric Chopin evokes a sensation as if your chest is tightly gripped by its wistful, lingering melody.
Said to have been composed when Chopin was around 19, it is a piece marked by a simple structure and unadorned, memorable themes.
While the main subject is steeped in sorrow, the middle section warms into a gentle, happy atmosphere, as though reminiscing about joyful days gone by.
Yet that respite is brief, and we are drawn back into a deep sadness.
Consider listening to it when you want to dwell in melancholy or slowly work through your grief.
Fantasy Pieces: Elegy (Lament), Op. 3-1 in E-flat minorSergei Rakhmaninov

Sergei Rachmaninoff, the great composer who produced numerous masterpieces.
This time, I’d like to introduce one of them: Elegie (Élégie) in E-flat minor, Op.
3 No.
1 from Morceaux de fantaisie.
As the title “Elegie” suggests, the piece is characterized by a weighty melody imbued with a sense of tragic pathos.
Many listeners may recognize it from figure skater Patrick Chan’s program, in which he used this piece.
Why not let yourself be intoxicated by a melody that reveals beauty within its gravity?
“The Seasons” – 12 Characteristic Pieces, Op. 37bis: October “Autumn Song”Pyotr Tchaikovsky

Pyotr Tchaikovsky, the great composer who has had a profound influence on modern artists.
Tchaikovsky created many masterpieces, but the one I especially recommend is The Seasons – 12 Characteristic Pieces, Op.
37bis: October, “Autumn Song.” This cycle portrays both the lives of ordinary people through the seasons and the seasons themselves.
In this particular piece, the dark melody—imbued with a poignant sense of longing, like autumn’s arrival and the falling of leaves—is especially captivating.
Be sure to check it out.
